Awaiting jak2 test

Thank you for welcoming me to this page. My son has had high red blood cells, haemoglobin and haemocrit for the past 9 months and had symptoms on and off during this, fatigue. Upper abdo pain, dizziness etc. We were forced to private gp as ours wasn’t interest, who referred him to a haematologist. She has now ordered jak2 test and another full blood count. Still waiting for jak2 results, but all his levels have come back down, although rbc still high and haemocrit at 0.50. My question is, do bloods fluctuate, as I’m worried gp will now dismiss him with these last lot of results.

Dear @Lisawindiate

Welcome to the forum and I am sorry to hear that your son has had symptoms that have been worrying for you and him. May I ask how old your son is and does he have any other health conditions to speak of? I only ask that some medications can affect your blood counts along with issues like dehydration.

I am sorry that you have had to access private care to access this assessment and ongoing tests. It is good to know that JAK2 mutation has been taken as apart of a full assessment. I would say that if this does come back as negative, which I hope it does, that I would still persist with the GP around your son’s symptoms as whilst they are likely not to be blood cancer related, they are still something that concerns you both. On our Blood cancer symptoms and signs | Blood Cancer UK webpages we do say that “Most people who have symptoms described on this page won’t have blood cancer. But it’s important to find out what’s causing them.”

In answer to your question, blood counts can fluctuate and this is often related to external factors like exercise, medications and infective processes.

I do hope you get to a point when your son feels better and that you feel reassured.

We are here if you should need support: Blood cancer information and support by phone and email | Blood Cancer UK

Best wishes
