I completed treatment for Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) in May 2022 (I no longer have Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) in my blood) and haven’t been away for 3 years due to covid and my treatment. Insurance companies will only recognise the fact I no longer have Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) once I have been clear for 2 years. Hubby has just taken a full years cover with Advanti for both of us (covering my Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL)) which has cost £340. This covers anywhere in Europe, generally anywhere else was much more expensive depending were you go !
Hi, welcome to the forum. I have used ‘Travel Insurance for Medical’ before and tell them what is wrong with me and I’ve been pleased with them.
I used Staysure for my last years cruise, it was pretty hard to explain that I was on watch and wait, funnily enough my husband had just undergone treatment for prostrate cancer and that wasn’t a problem. Fortunately they spoke to their underwriter who seemed to understand my situation and we ended up with pretty reasonable insurance. I only paid for the single trip as my husband will be 1, year cancer free for the next one, I believe that should be cheaper, as long as my blood tests behave themselves.

Hi CLL6 thank you so much for your reply and advice
Hi, I’m new here. Had blood test in late January. GP surprised by result and re-tested. Same , ‘abnormal as expected!’. Haematology Assessment Service were contacted. They didn’t want to see me. Booked in for another blood test 4 months after previous. I have a holiday booked and paid for (I arranged it in 2022) on a med cruise with family. Its a special treat as we haven’t been abroad in over 7 years. I did take insurance out at the time of booking. My question on this is, do I need to inform the insurance company of MGUS?
Hi @Zoom a great big welcome to posting on our forum.
My, very non medical thoughts, are that if you have been given a diagnosis of MGUS then yes, you do have to tell your insurance company.
Otherwise to be extra specially safe you could have a chat with them and say what you have said here.
Can you book the blood tests so you don’t miss your cruise?
You have been looking forward to this cruise for so long.
Y ou can always have a chat with the Blood Cancer UK support line on 0808 888 2080.
I look forward to hearing more about you.

Thank you Erica. I am sure there will be no problem making sure the blood test falls on a convenient date.
I wasn’t sure whether to say anything to the insurance, as it sounds as though this is a condition which unless it progresses to a certain level, of which I do not know what that may be, I will most likely continue life as if I didn’t know; although I do know and have that ticking timebomb in the back of my mind. If I hadn’t had a blood test to look at possibility of perimenopause also at same time as health check blood test (I don’t know which blood test originally showed the protein) I would be none the wiser.
Hi @Zoom yes, so many of us seem to be diagnosed through routine blood tests for other reasons.
I was diagnosed by a gynaecologist.
I, personally, am pleased that I did get the diagnosis, although as you say you now feel as if you have a ticking timebomb.
Look after yourself
Hi zoom, you will have to tell your insurance if the diagnosis. They can then add that into their system to cover you. They might add on a charge. As you are in a monitoring situation and not awaiting treatment then shouldn’t be a problem. Although you are not expecting your condition to cause any problems if you don’t tell them and something else unrelated happens you might not be covered. Travel insurance has become quite picky and tricky in the last few years. Have a great holiday
Hi @Zoom,
you have posed an interesting question about whether or not one needs to declare one has MGUS on travel insurance forms. It is afterall not cancer and there are probably thousands of people out there blissfully unaware that they have the condition. If there is no obvious place to put that information on the form the best thing to do is to ask as the last thing one wants is invalid insurance. I have yet to travel outside the UK since paraproteins were found in my blood. Probably will do later this year. I think I might still have a valid EHIC card.
Lets us know what you decide to do and have a lovely holiday.
Best wishes
Helen
Hi,
I called approx 8 insurers pre travelling to the USA and Channel Islands, Freedom was the company I chose after comparing what they offered VS price. I plan to use them again for my next break to Portugal in March. Hope you enjoy your break x
