It really did so much damage. Redwoods were an ideal building material for all who flocked here to mine for gold, and then oil was found so even more people moved to California to find their riches… Now it’s tech! There’s a former mine nearby that still to this day leaks a sulphuric substance into the bay, and the beautiful river town Guerneville is also known as Stumptown for a sad reason

Imagine if you do have redwoods nearby @DottieB, how exciting! Definitely worth a visit if you can—perhaps old manors that have tea rooms and fancy gardens might be the sort of place? Meanwhile, my dad is valiantly attempting to grow some redwood seeds in soggy South Wales so we shall see :evergreen_tree::evergreen_tree::evergreen_tree:

Hi @Duncan

That sounds awful, what is the sulphuric substance doing to the local ecosystem.i always wondered why it was called Stumptown , makes perfect but really sad sense now !

Have had a google because I was quite intrigued and apparently they are mainly in large gardens in the south . The victorians delighted in bringing back lots of specimen from different species and the redwoods were one such species!

Am in North Yorkshire myself so non close by but am definitely planning a trip

Exactly! It’s so gross seeing it leaking down the road into drains that lead to the bay. Locals complain, it gets cleaned up, and the leak continues :skull_and_crossbones:

Thankfully redwoods are so resilient that they can regrow in many ways, like as fairy rings or from the stumps left behind, so Guerneville is now full of new-growth forests and is very cute—they have the oldest gay saloon in the US, or is it California :rainbow: :cowboy_hat_face: :tumbler_glass:

Ah so there really are redwoods there, I love that you looked them up! Trust the Victorians to want to replicate redwood grandeur around their country estates! Next time I’m over I’ll see if I can visit some :evergreen_tree::evergreen_tree::evergreen_tree:

Hi @Duncan

Apparently Longleat (Wiltshire) is Home to the tallest giant redwood in the UK, measuring over 55m.
They don’t grow quite as tall in the uk as they do in California !

I love the idea of the oldest gay saloon being there , that’s my fact of the day :smiling_face:
If you are visiting near Yorkshire at any point I owe you lunch x

You’re on @DottieB, I’d lunch a good luncheon with you in beautiful Yorkshire! I’ve been lucky to visit a few times, mostly Leeds, Huddersfield and York, but even some of the gorgeous villages in the valleys between bigger towns. Lucky you living up there!

The Rainbow Cattle Co. saloon really is lovely, even our little barky hound is welcome in there—between you and me, he likes to sit on my lap at the bar, earwigging on Stef the barkeep and her wild conversations. Next time I go I’ll take a photo for you.

I’m going to look into where redwoods are around the UK. Imagine a tour of them! I bet there’s some nearer you :magnifying_glass_tilted_right: :evergreen_tree: :world_map:
