8 weeks for appointment after referral

I was recently referred by my GP for suspected blood cancer. My GP said the appointment should be within 2 weeks. However, I have received a letter with an appointment date that is 8 weeks away. Does this mean the haematology department has triaged my referral, checked my last couple of blood tests, and decided it’s not urgent?

Hi @Don1 and welcome to the forum,

It’s so difficult when you’re told one thing and then something like this happens isn’t it. 8 weeks must seem a long way off.

It’s hard to say as different hospital and trusts have different procedures with regards to referrals. I would suggest giving your GP a call and letting them know. If it was an urgent referral the appointment should be within 2 weeks like your doctors said so it’s definitely worth double checking what was said on the referral.

The Blood Cancer UK nurses have also suggested - on another post - that you try calling the hospital to see if they can give you anymore information.

Please keep us updated on how you get on
