9/10 stem cell donor worries

Hi, I’ve recently relapsed with Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) after having 4 rounds of chemo previously. I had hoped to control it with quizartinib for a few years as I had the FLT3 mutuation..A stem cell transplant was deemed too risky initially as only a 9/10 match but I’m here again having chemo and its now back on the cards. Worried about the 9/10 match and the consequences, has anyone else had a mismatched donor and can share their experiences please? Looking at the end of October for transplant.

Hi @Debcosgriff

Thanks for your update on this forum. Gosh, it certainly sounds like things are chopping and changing for you so it’s perfectly understandable you have some worries.

I have a thread on here as my daughter was diagnosed with Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) in 2023. She has not received a stem cell transplant but it was discussed early in her treatment. She is mixed heritage and has two unusual genetic mutations (flt3 and tp53) When looking for a potential match her consultant was very happy to proceed with a 9/10 match. At one point they were discussing a 7/10 match.

I would discuss your concerns with your team. Do remember you can also book a call with the wonderful specialist nurses here @BloodCancerUK-SupportTeam on this forum. They are a great source of advice and support.

Do take care of yourself and keep posting when you have time.

Sending positive thoughts

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for the message and sorry to hear about your daughter too. That does sound encouraging from what the Consultant said re a 9/10 match. I am dreading that stage and potential complications especially going into the season of coughs and colds etc but must face it and hoping it will work this time and keep the Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) from relapsing .

I hope your daughter is doing ok, it’s such a rollercoaster of a journey and impacts so many people along the way. Sending best wishes!

Hello I hope your stem cell transplant was a success. I am in the same situation and really not sure whether to go through with it given all the risks. How are you?

Hi Victoria,

Thanks for the message. I had my stem cell transplant in October 2025 and am now 105 days post transplant and doing well. There were lots of risks and the transplant itself and some of the side effects were tough but i’ve bounced back and feeling about normal again! I did lose a lot of weight and am still trying to put it on. I’ve also got some Graft-versus-host-disease in the form of a skin rash but its not too bad. At this stage, i’d say the risk for me was worth it but only time will tell. It was also the only option as I had relapsed previously. Good luck with whatever decision you make! x

Hi @Debcosgriff

I had my transplant and donor was a 9/10 match.

Transplant was in April 2025. Days after challenging as you say, especially when back home.

Nearly 10 months since transplant and Consultants happy with progress at this point.

I still just take things a day at a time as know how much of a rollercoaster blood cancer can be.

Hope you continue to move forward in a positive way
