Access to nMAbs & Antivirals

Hello @MCA

Is there any information in particular you need to know about the CMDU procedure or pathway? I will include below all the resources we have had on our webpages but am very happy to look futher if needed:

Hope this helps and do call if you would like to talk anything through:

Kind regards
Gemma

Hi Gemma,
Yes there is one part concerning me in partculer.
The part relating to calling 119 or reporting positive lateral flow online.
As this step appears to be where the problems lie.
The system of giving people an individual PCR test with barcode meant the test was directly linked to a named individual and the fact they had been given the test kit in first place meant they may be elligible for treatment hence generated call from CMDU. No need for 119 or online.

However that was changed to accept lateral flow test results however these are not individualised in any way and as there is no central list of those who may be elligible or so said Maggie Throup when asked specifically.

So when a person rings 119 or fills in form on line how is it decided to refer you to CMDU or not refer you and consequently leave you hanging for 24 hours. The Government acknowledge not everyone is “digitally indentifiable”. The person answering 119 is not probably medically qualified? and if you report test online what then happens? You wont have any certainty.

This part of the process seems unecessary to say the least what is the purpose of it and how does it operate.

However without a central list even 111 would have to use a perhaps more qualified judgement in making the referral and the only certainty of referral appears to be your clinical team or GP.

The other uncertainty is wether the CMDU actually have acess to your medical history it appears anecdotally at least they dont. The Government have yet to clearly
verify the position.

I hope you can look into this further.

Hi
A positive antiviral story. I have non hodgkins lymphoma on watch and wait. I tested positive friday morning rang 111 who contacted my gp. I had a telephpne consultation at midday and collected the anti virals at 4pm on the friday. It was as it should have been but i was expecting so much worse due to the experience of others on here.
Also on a positive after over 2 yrs of worrying if i get covid and the effects I find i have had worse colds so good news all round from me.

@Mandi713 Great to hear a positive outcome. I did note you rang 111 straight away not 119 or bother doing anything online.

Hi Alice,
I am wondering if you have any more information on accessing antivirals abroad? Before the pandemic I was a very keen traveller and although I have loved travelling around the UK I would dearly love to resume some foreign travel but nervous to do so.

Hi @Darish I will also copy your post to the Blood Cancer UK nurse advisors @BloodCancerUK_Nurses in case they can help.
Look after yourself

Hi @Darish,

Thank you for your post, and I do hope you’re doing okay. It’s very understandable to be feeling nervous about foreign travel and I’m sure you’re not alone in this. My understanding is that availability of antivirals abroad would be dependent on the health board in the country you’re travelling to. We usually suggest speaking with your treatment team before travelling to help you plan ahead, to get travel insurance if this is possible, and to research the country you’re visiting in terms of any travel issues such as covid (this website may be helpful, and you may wish to contact the health board in the country you decide to go to to find out more- https://travelhealthpro.org.uk/).

Within our covid treatment page, there’s a section called ‘What if I want to travel or go on holiday?’, which has some more information - Antibody and antiviral treatments for people with blood cancer | Blood Cancer UK.

Please don’t hesitate to give us a call, Darish, if you’d like to talk this through. You’d be very welcome to call us on 0808 2080 888.

Best wishes,
Tanya.
