Air travel, low platelets

Hi I have Chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia ('CMML') and whilst most of my bloods are reasonable my platelets are still going down now to 32. Does anybody have any experience or advice about air travel wthow platelets. I was hoping to fly to Gibraltar in June but another month on my platelets are likely to be lower that 30

Hi @Cati, really glad you’ve posted, and I hope some of our community members with Chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia will be along to share their experience of travelling.

Most importantly, do make sure you raise the flying question directly with your haematology team before committing to anything for June - they’ll be best placed to advise on whether your counts at that point make travel advisable, and what to have in place if you do go.

In the meantime, there’s already a thread on the forum where someone with Chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia ('CMML') asked a similar question about overseas travel: CMML and travel. And if you haven’t already found it, the main CMML community thread has nearly 250 replies from people who know this condition well. Our travelling with blood cancer tips page is also worth a look for practical guidance.

Take care,

@Cati i have a different blood cancer, myelofibrosis and currently my platelets are trending downwards, last week they were 46. My consultant adjusted my medication dose to stop the downwards trend.

In the next couple of weeks I will be flying to Cyprus. My consultant is ok with this and is next seeing me on my return when hopefully my platelets will have improved.

As @Ceri_BloodCancerUK says check with your medical team.
