Awaiting or considering or had a stem cell transplant, a place to share here

Hi @ChrisCKW, glad you are feeling so much better. I have been home since last Thursday but got quite a nasty infection in a bruise that I got fighting a chemo stand! Luckily antibiotics at home but temp a bit up and down so not felt like doing very much other than watching films lying on bed. It is lovely to be home though, eating normal food. Been out for a few very short walks but it’s going to take 3 months min. to be back to normal. Look very pale but bone marrow is busy working away in the background making more blood :crossed_fingers::crossed_fingers: Take Care and hope you are home soon xx

Hi nbk112 yes I saw consultant today. He said they are planning for me to go in W/c 3rd Oct. feel a bit disappointed it’s been delayed again but at least I have a date.
How are you getting on? xx

@Lyn99 so good to hear you are back home and recuperating. It must feel good to be the other side of the transplant. Shame about the nasty bruise and infection - those chemo stands can be a bit tricky to manoeuvre. I guess ally can do now is rest up and do what your body allows. Are you going for weekly check ups at hospital?
xx

@ChrisCKW I am guessing you have managed to get home. I hope you are feeling ok and have enjoyed some nice home cooking  xx

Hi @Summertime I bet you were so, so disappointed by the delay again, especially with the ‘BMT gang’ on here being further forward.
Perhaps learn from their experiences and not have an argument with a chemo stand.
Look after yourself and we are all here for you.

Hi @Summertime - mine was delayed a couple of times too, but once you have firm date it tends to be good to put in diary in ink :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:
It’s probably to fit in around your donor too - my donor was brother - so with me and 4 other sisters he really didn’t have much wiggle room!!:rofl:

Having missed veggies and fruit so much I had dinner from garden last night. I got home around 6pm, went and picked marrow which I stuffed with homegrown peppers tomatoes chilli onion then shop bought mushrooms, a little grated cheese and sprinkled with toasted breadcrumbs.
Anyone remember the scene from Braveheart where he shouts Freedom! Well I shouted vegetables (also made a salad of grilled tomatoes with balsamic vinegar and packet salad!
Lunch today was home grown melon with figs, yoghurt and honey.

(Ps I did have scrambled egg on toast for breakfast!)

Yes @Lyn99 Ive only walked round garden checking it out (I may have whispered I missed you but if no one hears it doesn’t really count as slightly crazy)
I’ve also been up and down (14) stairs a lot; boy has that made my legs ache  I am now hanging on to banister as inner thighs really grumbling at me. 4.5 weeks with no steps and no walking has really zapped muscle tone
I’m back to hospital for bone marrow aspiration and biopsy on Tuesday, then to BMT clinic on Friday for bloods, obs, see consultant to review meds etc. I’ll have to go to clinic weekly but it’s incredible how attentive they are xx

Thank you @Nichola75 - hospital food will (probably) keep you alive :rofl: but it lacks fresh veggies and I love fresh veggies and fruit. Normally I’m not vegetarian but yesterday I could have eaten all the things! Will be back to more normal tonight xxxx

FREEDOM sounds great to me and I have heard that talking to your produce makes it flourish even more, although you have definitely got ‘green fingers’.
It is really frightening how quickly we loose muscle strength, isn’t it.
It is a fine balance between building muscle strength and overdoing it, don’t ask me what it is. Take so much care you and your body have been through so much.

Well I’m thinking of divorcing my son - he asked if I wanted a stannah stair lift (he is a rat fink! ):rofl:

@ChrisCKW oh, I did laugh, your son only dared say it because he knows you can’t divorce him !!!

It’s so interesting how some people seem to have a relatively quick recovery and others seem to have problem after problem. You both sound pretty bright @ChrisCKW and @Lyn99 apart from the fatigue and lack of muscle strength. I hope I am the same. I do think a positive attitude helps too xx

Hi @Summertime, the date will soon come round. Yep, twice a week for bloods and central line flush. Good news is I’m not neutropaenic anymore but am still anaemic so bit limited on walks etc. They think that the anaemia will sort itself in time if not they will do transfussion. Muscles not too bad but a bit limited on breath at the moment!!

Hi @ChrisCKW Food looks lovely and I think it plays a big part in our recovery. Get those thighs a pumping . Just saying to @Summertime that my muscles aren’t bad but a bit breathless as anaemic at the moment but hopefully will settle soon. Xx

Hi @Lyn99 and @Summertime , I’ve spent about 5 years with anaemia (haemoglobin in low 70). Mines bounced up to 102 :tada::tada::tada: so pretty chirpy about that!
Platelets have been about 10-15, with dips (and transfusions) to 6. Now at 27 - so that’s pretty incredible.
Overall feeling well, went for 3k flat walk today and was great after. (Although I have just got into pjs and it’s not yet 9pm)
It really is the 14 stairs up and down that have made my inner and outer thighs hurt. I guess I never realised how many times I go up/down them. Won’t try cycling for a while!
I was incredibly poorly for about 6 days, but eventually perked up and things improved fairly steadily after that.
You will be fine @Summertime - it really is helpful knowing you have a positive attitude and that you will get through is (even if you do feel weak for a while after)

I’m back for bone marrow aspiration and biopsy on Tuesday, then Friday will be first clinic appointment. Hopefully BM tests will show good news xxxx

@ChrisCKW @Lyn99 I think you have both done amazing😀.
Can I ask a hair question? My hair has started to grow back, still fluffy and I still look like dumbo, but I wondered how the transplant has affected your hair? Dr C told me that I will lose all my hair plus eyebrows and eyelashes during transplant.
How have you both been affected? xx

Oh @Summertime I have always loved Dumbo.

Hi @Lyn99 and @ChrisCKW well done to both of you!!! I’m so glad your at the other side of the fence even though still a bit shaky! Your posts have been so helpful to read as I’m sure @Summertime will agree. I sort of give us an insight to what’s ahead…. although I know it can be different for everyone. Stay well you two and keep eating those lovely looking vegetables Chris. @Lyn99 have you seen Green Book the film? It’s worth a watch . Xxxx
