Awaiting or considering or had a stem cell transplant, a place to share here

I took my daughter with me to get my first wig she was 15 at the time
She chose the one that was similar in style to my original hair
I had been holding on to the last whisps of my own and the lovely man/owner/hairdresser chatted to me and I trusted him to buzz off the rest of my hair

School should have pastoral care should your son need any support and talk to his teacher/and head of year just so they know he will be dealing with his mum being in hospital and they can keep an eye on him

Sounds like you keep the kids involved and I have found that has worked for us too

Oh @2DB no pink wig then !!!
Yes, I think the emotional, practical and educational support given to children in schools now has vastly improved.
I also agree that talking to children and keeping them involved is so important as I believe they sense when something is happening or not right and often put 2 and 2 together and make 5 or even blame themselves.
Look after yourself

Well still here, 6 weeks tomorrow. Discharge was supposed to be today but stupid body went had another bleed. It’s only when I open my bowel so they think it’s the ulcers inflamed and bleeding. They started me on steroids on Tues so hopefully that will work. They never did infection route so maybe just the ulcers all the. All my obs are fine. So here for weekend, review Monday. Praying I can go then.
@Coastgirl thank yoU for your wishes.

Hope everyone is good as they can be. Hugs xxx

@Nichola75 not too bad somehow. The staff are all so kind and lovely and I have a nice quiet side room. Food is appalling but we have routine of hubs bringing me in food. We discovered m&s ready meals too as long as they can be microwaved. We had a few slip ups where he has brought me in a meal assuming it was micro but it needed to go into the oven…annoying so I have ended up with a bowl of cereal.

Desperately trying to put on weight but not having much luck. Consultant told me to stuff my face with high calorie foods all weekend :joy: xxx

That’s good to hear. Must be tough for hubby as well. It must make it so much easier having nice staff around you. I bet they’ll miss you when you’ve gone. I’m glad you have a quiet room as well. Hospital noise can be just awful can’t it!
If you’re going to have a microwave meal it has to be M and S!!!
When do you ever have the excuse to stuff your face with whatever food you want. What’s on the menu?

Nothing I don’t even look at the menu!:woman_shrugging:t2: Everything being brought in for me now, including a cream cake each day :joy::joy:

Oh @Summertime, I can’t believe the long run of it you’ve had. Everything crossed here you go home on Monday.

And yes, I should double those cream cakes while it’s medically approved!

Oh @Summertime I can imagine you have the days you have been there crossed off on the wall behind your bed.
I shall sound like Victor Meldrew and say ā€˜I don’t believe it’.
Spring has sprung whilst you have been in hospital.
I got hooked on the sponge puddings and custard when I was in hospital.
I expect your husband has got his instructions to bring foods and goodies of the highest calorific value in for you.
You talk severely to your body to be on it’s best behaviour from now on.
Thinking of you loads and fingers and toes crossed for Monday
Hang in there and be kind to yourself

I do hope your bottom bleeds disappear completely. It’s upsetting AND they hold you hostage.
The M&S in the hospital Concorde has some foods, things like cream cakes, hot cross buns and croissants/Danish pastries. So if you ever end up with the wrong ready meal ask if anyone could pick you up something from there. Mind you I have my fingers crossed that you’ll be out by the start of the week.
You were a bit of a slender fairy when I saw you, you’ve lost lots since then, please don’t lose anymore weight! Xxxxx

Had another little bleed and now wards been closed for 2 weeks due to 2 people with covid so that my hub can’t even visit. I’m praying I can go Monday, really can’t stand much more. I’ve also asked can I be covid jabbed while I’m here xx

I’ve not been posting so much recently but I have been following this thread and reading all the difficulties that you have been through since your transplant. I so hope that things improve for you and you manage to get home soon. I can’t imagine how you must feel and now to have your visits stopped and the covid threat must be horrendous. Thinking of you and wishing you home :hugs::hugs:xx

@Summertime … I will say a prayer now you get to escape Monday. I cannot begin to imagine how hard that had been on you and your family. Am sure you have had hard times in there but you are so resilient xxx

Wig fitting went fine and everyone has had a go of it now! We had a good laugh with it as q family. Hubbie becomes very feminine when he has it on…a new side to him after 30 yrs :joy:

I know i wont be layghing when my hair is gone but look at least Im all set. I got 3 caps and a night time cap too.

Am hoping this week coming now gives us q better idea of time scale.

Take care everyone xxx

I’m doing well thanks but still have back issues which limit activity. You must have some hair now, is it curly? I like having hair but curly is really difficult to manage :confounded: I’m sure that’s probably the last thing you’re thinking about at the moment but I’m hoping that this will be the only difficulty you’ll need to manage in the near future!! Keep going girl, it will get better I’m sure of it. Home is just round the corner.

I dreaded losing my hair particularly when it started to go really thin and drop out in handfulls. If I can offer any advice get it shaved off just before that happens. It’s amazing how soon you get used to being bald and a wig will give you lots more confidence. It will grow back after a few months so just remember it’s not permanent :slightly_smiling_face:x

Thanks @Lyn99 would you mind me asking if the nurses do the shaving of it?

No they didn’t, my hair started to fall out 2 weeks after my conditioning chemo so I was at home. I went to my hairdresser who shaved it for free! I’m lucky that she works from a converted garage, one client at a time so wasn’t too embarassing. I didn’t want to be on display in a normal salon :worried: I did buy myself some clippers, they weren’t expensive, just to keep the whispy bits under control, and they are quite easy to use at home, very useful.
