Bone marrow biopsy

Good evening, I have recently had a bone marrow biopsy. I noticed that my marrow slides had been placed on the windowsill to air dry. They were red so had not been stained. Is this normal?

Hello @meljarv

Welcome to the forum, and thank you for taking time to reach out.

I’m sure that having tests is a very concerning time, and there are often many questions we want answers to.

I’m no medical expert, so I’m not in a position to answer your question with confidence, but if I am not mistaken bone marrow biopsy slides to appear red immediately after a sample is taken and placed on the slide because the sample is fresh tissue, rich in blood cells.

Please do refer to your medical experts for clarification on the matter or if you prefer you can always peak confidentially with our support services team for information and support on 0808 2080 888.

Take good care

Morning @meljarv I’m too not sure on the technical side of the slides, to be honest. I would agree with @GenesisDevice that your clinical nurse specialist would be the best person to ask about that—they’re usually great at explaining the ‘behind the scenes’ bits of the tests. It’s a bit of a weird experience, isn’t it? Hope the recovery is going okay.

Dear Jules,

Thank you for your reply. It is weird to put slides on the windowsill, not a controlled environment. I now have an appointment with my Consultant on 22nd of January so will discuss with him, as I have not been allocated a clinical nurse specialist yet.

Hope you had a lovely Christmas.

Kind regards

Melanie
