Any update Logsie ,please I cannot find an information about Chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia (CMML)
Hi @chrissyD. Thank you for the reminder. Unfortunately my dentist decided to change my appointment to the date of the meeting and the same time. As it is so difficult getting a dentist these days I dare not try to reschedule it. Will this be available to watch on a down load later. Hope you are okay. Lynda
Hi @Lyndam
That’s a shame but you need to hang onto a dentist appointment! As it’s a support meeting, it won’t be recorded -for confidentiality reasons - but maybe we can all feed back to you on how it went? Without naming names!
Take care
Hi @ chrissy D. That would be good if I can get some feed back from others.

Morning everyone,
Had a fight last week with a gang of wood pigeons! I lost. They were busy ripping blooms off shrubs etc. So enraged I rushed to the patio door tripped up severely sprained my ankle tore skin off my elbow and slightly sprained both wrists! Couldn’t stand, convinced I had broken my ankle as it instantly swelled like a balloon. Wife can’t drive I couldn’t stand or walk so no alternative to a ambulance call. The call taker was excellent, when I mentioned the instant bruising and swelling and very low platelets a paramedic was despatched and he also thought the ankle was broken. My blood pressure was 200/90 I think my rage was responsible for that as it soon returned to normal. The two ambulance girls were excellent and I was soon at the local AandE. 2 X-rays indicated no fracture but very swollen ligaments. Rest , Elevation, and Ice were recommended plus two walking sticks. I never noticed my damage wrists and elbow to the following day when the bruising showed up. Purple from wrist to fingertips and very swollen. My ankle likewise is now swollen and purple to the tips of toes. Then on Thursday my calf above the damaged ankle swelled up nearly 2 inches extra circumference increase compared to left leg! I thought that with platelets around 40 a blood clot was highly unlikely but my wife insisted to call 111. The clinician arrived at 4am and carried out a examination and declared no blood clot just inflammation from ankle injury. Keep it elevated and rested. The NHS deserve 10/10 for the help I have received on this occasion. Ankle still very swollen painful and red, green, and purple and no sign of calf swelling going down. Never mind at least the Chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia (CMML) is stable and that’s more important than a sprained ankle. Hope you are all well I would love to get my hands on those pigeons.
All the very best to all unclejack.
Oh @Unclejack !
You are certainly paying the price for your Wood Pigeon Rage!
So sorry to hear of all your injuries but so glad to hear you had good help from NHS and that nothing is broken! Any injuries to lower limbs certainly respond well to Rest, ice and elevation! I have a couple of flexible ice packs in a sleeve to wrap round my leg on such occasions as I am prone to cellulitis if there’s any skin damage. Hope that helps but it will take time. A neighbour has a model of a bird of prey in her garden to scare off the wood pigeons-not sure how well it works but they certainly come over the fence to annoy us!
Hope you are soon on the road to recovery.
Oh @Unclejack wow, I do not know what to say, I find when I have an ‘incident’ and get really bruised that it can be very painful and take ages to go.
Have you got any other aches and pains, because from experience and by the sound of it you might well have also jolted your whole body?
I have also got a resentment and anger against those pigeons too.
Yes, thank goodness for our NHS these things happen to us so quickly and easily.
Really look after yourself and keep that leg elevated.
Sending healing vibes to you and you are worth far more than blooms on your shrubs
@Unclejack Oh my!
So sorry to hear this. How horrible for you! Sending love & healing hugs to you. Feel better soon xx
Oh dear. Sending best wishes for a speedy recovery. My husband has the same problem with pigeons on our patio, I keep telling him he will fall over one of these days when he jumps up to shoo them away. As Erica said the shrubs are not worth all you have been through.

Hi everyone
I am having a bad time with my right leg. My right leg (calf ) deteriorated over weekend the muscle is now 2 inches larger in circumference than my left leg and also warm and red to the touch as well as ankle and foot being a combination of swollen, red and purple. I really don’t like pestering doctors but I contacted NHS 111 for advice. I was referred to the local walk in centre. Two clinicians examined my leg took measurements etc and referred me to the local hospital A andE because of a suspected DVT or compartment syndrome condition. The service I received at the walk in centre was very good.
Anyway after about 4 hours I was examined and the doctor suspected a DVT. I pointed out that my haemotologist had said two years ago when blood thinners were withdrawn that the chance of a blood clot with such low platelets was extremely unlikely. But he still believed it was a DVT and a scan was needed. Unfortunately my hospital don’t do ultra sound scans at the weekend so as it was dangerous and urgent I needed to be injected with a blood thinner to protect me until 9am this morning when a ultrasound could take place. So as instructed I arrived at 9am and the scan took place about one and half hours later. Fortunately the technician told me no sign of a DVT and I reported back to the clinic fully expecting to a chat with the consultant about the swollen calf and possible compartment syndrome as suspected at the walk in centre.
I was quickly told by a nurse that I was discharged and to visit my GP with any problems! So the only result was I was 50 pounds lighter in taxi fees and had regretfully had accepted a blood thinner shot. So hopefully a GP appointment tomorrow if I can get one if I’m still breathing
Best wishes to all
Unclejack
pounds lighter in taxi fees and regretfully
Oh @Unclejack don’t things always deteriorate at the weekend.
What a kerfuffle back and forth you have had.
Be careful after having the blood thinner shot.
Let alone the taxi fees, grrrrrrr.
I really hope you have got a GP appointment and a plan.
Please do keep updating us, I am very concerned about you.
Really look after and be very kind to yourself
Oh gosh @Unclejack like Erica has said, what a horrible time you are having. I’m crossing everything I have for a speedy recovery & a good appt with your GP. Do let us know how it goes. Best wishes xx
You are in the wars at the moment. Please make sure you do keep on going to your gp, hospital etc as a swelling like this can easily turn to cellulitis and cause more problems. Hope you feel better soon.
Hi @Unclejack @Erica @Sisi @ @Lyndam
I’m glad @Lyndam mentioned cellulitis. Far be it from me to make a medical comment (!) but my personal experience since my Chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia (CMML) diagnosis (and before - except I didn’t make the connection!) is that most injuries I sustain below the knee, however minor, can rapidly escalate to massive swelling, redness, tightness and heat around the damaged area. And it can be VERY painful
. Whether it is cellulitis or not obviously I cannot say but the net result is the same! I had a bad case last year when I badly scraped my shin area, albeit through a pair of jeans, on a metal bed frame and had a nasty graze that led to exactly the symptoms you are describing! GP practice sent out a paramedic who suggested amoxicillin which I grudgingly took as I could barely walk with the pain. However, I don’t think they worked as it seemed to take its usual amount of ice and elevation to heal up and I still have the scar to prove it-over a year later!!
Best to keep a close eye on it and check with GP. At least DVT ruled out!
Sorry this has been such a costly experience -in both time and money. Some areas have volunteer hospital drivers who can take you to and from hospital if you have no other options? Might be worth enquiring about for any future incidents?
Meanwhile, keep your foot raised higher than your hip and I also find it handy to raise the affected foot on a couple of pillows in bed so it remains raised all night.
Keep us updated.![]()
@Erica @Erica @Lyndam @ChrissyD @Sisi .
Thanks for the support. I noticed the blotchy bruising is now pushing past the knee. At the end of the day I am to blame for this situation. What also annoyed me was a doctor deciding I had a blood clot was likely when my haemotologist said that very low platelets made it almost impossible to have blood clots.
The clinician at the walk in centre said he believed a clot was unlikely and.it was probably compartment syndrome. But the fact I was shooed out of clinic by a nurse without the doctor even looking at my symptoms after the ultrasound. I suppose being ill and elderly is not an advantage in the coming era of assisted dying in the UK. But moaning achieves nothing as it seems nobody listens. On a brighter note they took a blood test yesterday and my platelets level had nearly doubled to 72. The second best reading since diagnosis! Or perhaps that’s just a reaction to the fluid filling my leg. Sorry for being so down but I think this isn’t going to end well. Seems my ‘remarkable’ bone marrow result of only a few weeks ago is now a distant memory or was it just a dream and never happened in reality? Strangely never really thought at the end of the day a gang of pigeons and my stupid reaction to them could cause such depression.
Bestwishes uncle jack.
Oh @Unclejack no need for apologies for feeling down. It’s completely understandably you must be worried. Thinking of you & here’s for a restful night. Take care xx
@Erica @ChrissyD @Lyndam @Sisi
Morning all.
I Have just had a typical GP receptionist conversation. Rang them at 8 o 'clock sharp phone engaged. Eventually got through at 8 30 . Explained the situation. Also pointed out that when I rang the previous day the receptionist said she would put all the information on the system to ensure the practice emergency doctor would see me. The receptionist was very good, sympathetic and said that all details are on the system so there would be no problems today. This is this morning conversation. We have no appointments left ring tomorrow at 8am. I replied that the receptionist yesterday afternoon told me she had put all my details on the system and this would ensure I would get an appointment with the practice emergency doctor. She replied the doctor would send me back to A and E. I said I have been to A and E. And have had a ultrasound which was clear but my calf is still very swollen,warm, painful and discoloured. I was shocked disgusted but I managed to resist the temptation to vent my spleen. So I have visited the walk in centre who were excellent, A and E who gave me an unnecessary blood thinner shot because unbelievably they don’t carry out ultra sound scans at the weekend and blood clots can be very dangerous. So I was administered a medication that could make my low platelets bleeding situation worse. So that’s it folks seems I have been denied even a five minute GP appointment. Yesterday I was denied a consultation with the doctor at the hospital as there was no blood clot to discuss. BUT I still have a badly swollen calf. I suppose in our dreadful country elderly people with cancer are no longer a priority.
Best wishes unclejack.
If your leg is no better this morning and you cannot get a doctors appointment you need to ring 111 as they can contact gp’s and insist they see a patient. If not go back to a&e and make a fuss. Your platelet level will rise if you have inflammation, as mine went up when I had been ill and a blood test showed inflammation. My haematologist told me this is what happens. Take care.
@Lyndam
Hi Lyndham I’ve been everywere more than once. I have had blood tests on Sunday, I can only hope that my problems settle down naturally. In fact I am seriously considering letting my Chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia (CMML) run it’s course naturally and stop all the blood tests and appointments. After all at nearly 75 I can’t have the only possible cure a stem cell transplant. And on current experience when my time comes I can expect no help only possibly assisted dying. Yes I thought my massive increase in platelets was probably linked to the injury. Strange, since I was diagnosed I never thought gardening would overtake my Chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia (CMML) as a threat to life. As a aside a few weeks ago I heard our wonderful PM explaining as of April new rules would ensure that GP appointments access would dramatically change cutting out the 8 am BLOCK. My practice obviously are carrying on as usual. THE RECEPTIONIST SAID WE DO NOT PRE BOOK APPOINTMENTS.
BESTWISHES UNCLEJACK.
@Unclejack @Sisi @Lyndam @Erica
I’m sure we all feel your pain and frustration. You must be very concerned about this but I doubt you would get any better advice from your GP than the original suggestion to ice, rest and elevate - now that you are reassured to know nothing is broken and no DVT. The only possible treatment which might be suggested if and when you get to see anybody (!) would be antibiotics for cellulitis if it is thought to be a skin infection from damaged skin? And I know you are reluctant to take too many antibiotics. I know it’s hard but try not to worry and make the best of sitting with your leg up - outside of the weather is good - but no poisoning pigeons in the park (if you’re old enough to remember the Tom Lehrer song!). Hope it all starts feeling better soon.
