First month of treatment

Hi all, my lovely Mum was diagnosed with Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) at the end of October. She is 83 so is being treated with Ventoclax and Azacitidine. 7 days of injections and 28 days of tablets. We are in the second week of treatment and she’s not feeling well at all. Does it get easier? Does anyone have any tips to help her? Many thanks

Hello @jd11a

Thank you for your post and welcome to our forum.

We are so sorry to hear about your Mum’s diagnosis of Acute myeloid leukaemia (Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML)) and can imagine this is a difficult time for you and your family.

Should you wish to talk things through, you can speak to one of our nurses on our support line on 0808 2080 888. We’re hear to listen and help.

Do keep your mum’s treating team updated on how both you and her are doing so that they can provide support the best they can. If she is feeling unwell, it is important you let them know as soon as you can.

We do have an information page on Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) non-intensive treatment | Blood Cancer UK which includes a section on venetoclax and azacitidine. If you would like more information specifically on these drugs and side effects etc. I’d be happy to provide this to you, but as mentioned, it is important to inform the team of how your mum is feeling in case they need to assess her, change any medications or dosing or add in additional medication or therapies to help manage her condition.

We hope others can share experiences with you too

Take care & warm wishes,

Emma (support services nurse)
