Hello everyone,
With flu cases currently higher than usual across the UK and being talked about in the news, we know that some community members may be feeling concerned. Everyone’s situation is different, but some of us may be at higher risk of infection or complications - particularly if in active treatment or living with a weakened immune system.
A few things you might choose to think about during this 'flu season include:
-
Flu vaccination - if you’re eligible and feel able to have it, you may wish to talk with your healthcare team about whether a flu jab is right for you this year.
-
Reducing exposure in busy spaces - some people try to avoid the Christmas crowds altogether, or decide to wear a face covering in crowded or enclosed public places, especially during peak flu season. This is a personal choice, and there’s no one ‘right’ approach.
-
Being alert to infection risk - knowing what signs to look out for, and when to seek medical advice, can help you feel more prepared. See our handy blood cancer infection alert card, which you can order for free.
As well as the above, here are some links that might help thinking through what feels right for you:
-
Understanding vaccines and how well they may work if you have blood cancer (not flu-specific, but useful context)
As always, your clinical team are best placed to give advice tailored to your circumstances. But if you’re feeling anxious or would like to talk things through to get a clearer understanding of managing infection risk, our Support Line is here on 0808 2080 888, or you’re very welcome to share how you’re feeling and reach out for advice here on the forum.
Take care and stay warm,
