Slightly elevated platlets

Hi. I have been feeling unwell for well over a month. Extreme tiredness, headaches and aching heavy legs constantly. My GP did my bloods and platlets came back 600, the gp re-did my blood again 3 days later and the platlets are now 547 and she says I am improving, and my body was probably fighting an infection but I am still having the same symptoms which is worrying me. All other blood tests for inflammation and infection came back clear and I’m not lacking in vitamins, white cells were slightly elevated and I think one still is. My question is should I ask to have another blood test in 4-6 weeks time if I am still having the same symptoms?

Hello @Louisa89, welcome to the Forum - I’m glad you found us.

It sounds like you’re worried about whether these symptoms and blood results might be related to blood cancer, is that right? I just want to make sure I understand where you’re at so I can point you to the right information and support.

If so, and to answer your question directly - yes, it would be sensible to ask for another blood test in 4-6 weeks if your symptoms are still there. And if things change significantly or you feel worse in the meantime, it’s worth checking in with your GP sooner. Regardless of the cause, you shouldn’t have to just put up with unwell.

One thing that might help is keeping a record of your symptoms to share with your GP. Our free symptoms guide can help with this.

You might also find our blood cancer symptoms and signs page helpful, which has useful questions you could ask your doctor. I should mention though - while it’s absolutely right to get symptoms checked out, most people who experience the symptoms listed on that page don’t have blood cancer. But getting to the bottom of what’s causing them is still important.

If you’d like to talk through any of this in more detail, our support line nurses are wonderful and would be happy to speak with you. The number is 0808 2080 888 and the service is completely free.

Do let us know how things go, and take care of yourself.

Hi Ceri. Thank you for your reply.

Yes when I have googled my symptoms and the raised platlets, blood cancer did come up. I would usually dismiss it as being silly but I haven’t felt so unwell with no obvious reason and I did ignore the symptoms before even calling my GP. I will definitely go back and get a re-test in 4-6 weeks. Thank you again.
