Starting a trial

Hi All

My husband was diagnosed 2 years ago and now needs treatment. He was told this at an appointment on July

As he’s had no treatment before and us relatively young (56) they have asked if he would like to start a trial for targeted treatment, he said yes and the trial was due to start in August. This was pushed back to the end of August, then the end of September and now they will call him when it starts. It isn’t at the hospital he usually goes to but a larger teaching hospital.

In the meantime he’s having blood tests with our local hospital and over the telephone appointments.

I think what I’m trying to ask is, is it Ok for him to be left without treatment? He’s having the odd nightsweats and I can see the nodes in his neck (he’s slim though and always has been). We’ve both phoned both hospitals and it’s all very matter of fact.

Thank you for reading

Hello @TJ3001

Thank you for taking time to post on our forum, its good that you felt you could reach out for support.

I’m sorry to learn about your husband’s circumstance, this must be difficult, however I’m comforted to know you are in regular contact with the relevant medical experts.

I don’t know, but I am assuming your husband is on active monitoring (some times referred to as wait and watch but I find the term “active monitoring” a much nicer phrase). If that’s so, my experience to date after being diagnosed with Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) in April this year is that a blood test is taken every six months or so and any actions required are followed once the results of the bloods are back.

You mention some very specific observations (night sweats etc) and its probably wise to speak with the GP / Medical specialists and raise your concerns, however let me clarify I am not a medical expert and I am not giving advice.

If you click on the Blood cancer support | Blood Cancer UK link you will find lots of useful information, but always remember we have our blood cancer support line that is a free and confidential service for all people with blood cancer, their friends and family, and for anyone worried about blood cancer.

You can call us for free on [0808 2080 888](tel:0808 2080 888) to speak to one of our trained support team in confidence about whatever is on your mind – whether you have a specific question about the diagnosis or treatment or want to talk about how you’re feeling, you are not alone. Providing support to those affected by blood cancer is at the heart of what we do.

Take good care of each other

Thank you

Mike.
