After allogenic stem cell transplant how long does it take?

Hi,
My husband had his stem cell transplant 16 days ago, how long has it taken for anyone to start getting their white blood cells back?

My husband is on day 20 post transplant and his came in I think around day 13 at 0.06, it went to 0.08 on day 14, 0.09 on day 15 and then picked up pace after that. He was released yesterday on day 19. His doctors did tell him that it can take 3-4 weeks to see something as he had a haplo match rather than full match.

Hang in there, and ask his medical team for more specific guidance. I am sure they would prefer to put your mind at ease than have you worry,

Take care and thinking of you both.

A great big welcome to our forum.
I hope others can share their experiences but don’t forget we are all very special unique individuals so there is no one size fits all.
Be guided by your husbands medical team.
Please do keep posting as I look forward to hearing more about you both.
Please do look after yourself as well as you care for your husband.

I forgot to say that because my husband had a Haplo transplant, they give the GCSF shots for a period of time because cells can take longer to come in if left without in comparison to a full transplant so I have no doubt that this had something to do with it too!

Thankyou for your reply! Very good to know , I know that everyone is very different , I know they say they’ve got to be going up for 3 days in a row before they can go home but I guess they also have to be a certain level.
I rarely see the medical team when they visit him , always seem to miss them, even though I go almost daily .
Glad your husband is home
How is he? Very tired?

Yes I think they wanted at least 3 days continuing to go up and above 0.5 before they could discuss discharge.

He’s doing well, he had an e.coli infection around day 8 in hospital but other than that had some mucositis and a few days where he felt pretty rubbish.

He was happy to be home but he can’t do much and requires lots of naps and resting. It took him probably 30-40 minutes to go through his medicines this morning but I’m sure he will get into the swing of it. I don’t think food tastes of much but he is eating little and often. He came out with me this morning to sit on a camping chair and watch our daughter play sport for 30 minutes and he has been napping on the sofa since then.

I’m expecting my husband not to be able to do much initially , he’s 65 but usually very fit & active & determined !
Glad your husband is doing well
