This message is very premature and not something I am thinking of anything soon, so early on in my diagnosis but before I found out I had Chronic myeloid leukaemia I was booked in for some cosmetic surgery, mainly to help build my very low self esteem that I have due to issues in past relationships etc. the surgery should be next week which makes me really sad as I’ve obviously had to cancel it. Has anyone with Chronic myeloid leukaemia undergone any kind of cosmetic surgery? I’m hoping I can revisit this once I have got my head around this awful illness.
Hi @CarlaWild a very interesting question and I hope someone will be able to share their experiences.
I will copy it to the Blood Cancer UK nurses @BloodCancerUK_Nurses for you.
It is slightly different but I had to have several teeth out and only a specialist dentist would touch me. He worked with my Haematology consultant and GP and I was on a course of antibiotics before, during and after the extractions because of my Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) and having a weakened immune system.
Personally I think you are doing the right thing by giving yourself time to come to terms with your diagnosis, it took me a while to come to terms with my shock.
Be ever so kind to yourself and please do keep posting I have found our forum is a safe place to say how it really is for me
I look forward to hear more about you.
The Blood Cancer UK support line is also there for you on 0808 2090 888
Thank you for your response @Erica. I know the question seems so so trivial and I was hesitant to post but I had saved up for a long time to have surgery and by Sod’s Law this illness was detected a month before it was due to take place. It has been booked a year so it’s very disappointing. I suppose I am just looking for someone to tell me that in the future it will be a possibility but I’m no where near ready to take any kind of step like that at the moment.
Hi @CarlaWild I forgot to say earlier perhaps talk to your medical team when you feel the time is right for you and see what they say.
I certainly do not think that your question is at all trivial and it really comes over how important it feels to you.
Be very kind to yourself and please do keep posting
Dear @CarlaWild,
Thank you for reaching out and sharing this personal information with us. I am so very sorry that things have turned out this way, I can only imagine how this must have felt, not only having such a shock at diagnosis but also having to cancel the surgery which I can see was going to be such a huge step in your life.
I completely agree with Erica and when you feel ready to open up about this it would be best to chat directly with your doctor, this isn’t trivial and hopefully in time with the support of your haematologist you will be able to re-organise the surgery at a time that is suitable. Do not give up hope of having the surgery, just remind yourself for now it is just on hold. We are at the end of the phone if you want to talk at any stage, our number is 0808 208 0888.
Be kind to yourself.
