Deeply anxious following blood tests - advice appreciated

Hello,

I’m seeking any advice possible following problematic blood results. For some years I’ve had niggling groin pains on one side , with further aches to the leg. I raised this at a GP appointment, which resulted in a full blood count. Results showed raised Eosinophils, at 1.1. This was almost two years ago. The bloods were repeated 4 months later, and had raised to 1.2. GP felt it was allergies and requested a groin X-ray to rule out arthritis (runs in the family). Results of that showed mild calcification on one spot but nothing more.

No follow-up was suggested but it seems I was on osteopathy list as received an appointment for this week (about a year on). This just so happened to be timed with a request by me for a repeat blood test, as although my vague hip ache hasn’t worsened, the high eosinophils niggled in my mind (I also happen to be something of a medical phobic, so my fears must have been deepening as otherwise I’d never return to a GP!). The bloods have now come back with much higher eosinophils (1.7) which I believe is now hypereosinophilia, thus ruling out allergies. Also all immune tests and other blood tests were normal. At the osteopathy appointment, all seemed fine but when the consultant dug in my groin the pain became very intense (and still hurts now). Repeat xray normal so now waiting a groin MRI.

Im very concerned that all this points to a blood cancer. Obviously I’m no doctor, but the fear is now high and I’m struggling to function. I’m in my forties with two young kids and I don’t know what to do now or how to manage this unknown space. Hypereosinophilia seems to be quite unusual except in blood cancers or parasitic infections (which I don’t have).

Any suggestions appreciated - I’ve now not slept for three days and feel pretty dreadful!

Thank you

Hi @Zog welcome to our forum.
Just reading your post shows your anxiety and from my experience if I do not sleep my anxiety rises, I cannot function and my logic goes out the window.
From what you say your GP is doing fact finding tests to rule conditions in or out.
This does take time and the waiting and not knowing are the worst feelings, especially when you are already anxious.
Perhaps write down all your fears, questions and practicalities for your next appointment.
Have you asked your GP whether your symptoms are a blood cancer?
In between be ever so kind to yourself and really look after yourself and try, and I know this is not easy, divert your mind.
Please do let us know how you get on, we are very unique complex beings

Good Morning @Zog,
Welcome to the forum, I am so glad you found us and were able to come and share your anxieties. I am sorry this is all causing you so much worry.
I am glad that you are awaiting the MRI, hopefully this will give a clearer insight into what’s going on in your groin.
Can I ask if the GP has come back to you regarding the blood results? I just wondered if they have any plan to refer you to a Haematologist. You could always request this. A Haematologist would be able to look into this further to see if it is anything to worry about. I would also encourage you to talk to your GP about how anxious this is all making you.
I have attached a link from our website for people worried about blood cancer, it mentions the most common signs and symptoms and also helps to guide conversations with your health care provider. Blood cancer symptoms and signs | Blood Cancer UK
You are also very welcome to call us, if you would like to talk things through, our number is 0808 208 0888.
Take good care,

Thank you so much for your kind reply. I’ve got back to the GP and they will see me later this week. I also had a very generous phone call earlier today. I really appreciate the response.

I’m so grateful to you for taking the time to write. I’m struggling very much to manage the anxiety but the GP will see me later in the week. It is diverting the mind that I find especially difficult. I tend to wander to Google…

Thank you so much.

Oh @Zog I do love your turn of phase that you tend to wander to Google.
Perhaps be very honest with your GP about your anxiety, that is what they are there for.
Even after all these years if a medical person asks me how I am my default answer is ‘I’m fine’.
Yes, diverting the mind is difficult, isn’t it, but I found that it does get easier.
Be ever so kind to yourself
