Diagnosed with ET MPN after Stroke

Hello :waving_hand: Just wanted to pop on and introduce myself and see if there is anyone in a similar situation to me.

In January 2024 I had a stroke two weeks after my 41st Birthday. This was caused by multiple blood clots in my brain (CVST) which then caused a brain haemorrhage (Subarachnoid haemorrhage). At the time I was told my stroke was caused by the contraceptive pill. I’ve recovered really well from my stroke.

I was seen by haematology 15 months after my stroke and was told they didn’t think the stroke was caused by the contraceptive pill and they’d like to test for a blood clotting disorder. I got the results today and I have been told I have the JAK2 mutation/Essential thrombocythemia (ET) Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN).

I’m obviously a bit shocked. I didn’t realise blood cancer was in the running for being the cause of my stroke but here I am  So yes, that’s me in a nut shell. Looking forward to getting to know some of you

Hello and welcome to the forum @Bigmugoftea

Thank you for sharing your story—it sounds like you’ve been through an incredibly tough and unexpected journey. I’m so glad to hear you’ve recovered well from your stroke, and I can completely understand how receiving a diagnosis like Essential Thrombocythaemia (Essential thrombocythemia (ET)) on top of that must feel like a lot to take in. Here is some links to info on the web pages about Essential thrombocythemia (ET).

It’s a real shock to hear the words “blood cancer” when you weren’t expecting it, but you’re not alone. This community is full of people like us, who understand what it’s like to face a diagnosis like this, and we’re all here to support one another.

Please do keep posting and asking questions, or just sharing how you’re feeling—there’s no pressure, and you’re very welcome here.

Take care, and looking forward to hearing more from you.
