Hairy Cell Leukaemia Relapse

Hi @dmquinlan I am exhausted just reading your post, what a week.
I am so glad that your brother’s wedding went well and it was quite a ‘party’.
More importantly I am overjoyed that you were able to be there, it must have been great to catch up with all your family after so long.
Look after yourself and take care.

Good News! I’ve just been informed by my haematologist that my blood counts are normal. No chemo tomorrow! Yay!
This doesn’t mean end of treatment just yet, but a break for a few weeks. Next step is a bone marrow biopsy to see how many more cycles of chemo, if any I may still need.

Yay @dmquinlan you’ve made my day, a celebration is in order.

Recovering at home now after this mornings Bone Marrow Biopsy. I received a call on Monday saying my Tuesday appointment was moved to Thursday. This was a surprise to me, as I’d received no notification of this in the post or SMS. Anyway, went smoothly this morning, the staff at the Lister in Stevenage were fantastic and supportive. Was interesting to see all the stuff they extracted on slides and sample bottles. Fingers crossed no hairy cells left to be shaved…

Given the initial treatment was estimated at 6 months - anything short of that is a bonus!

Looking forward to getting back on the bike training (maybe next weekend!) - I’ve raised quite a bit so far.

I have just been out for a walk and it was glorious here @dmquinlan
Take it steady on the bike, yes, let’s hope no shaving to be done.
Take care

Hi @dmquinlan,

I remember the Bone Marrow Biopsy well. Not a pleasant experience is it.

Please let us know how you’ve gotten on once you get your results. I hope you’re feeling ok in this interim period before you get some feedback.

Take Care

Nick

Had call from consultant yesterday - some of the biopsy results in showing very good progress - positive results.
I didn’t quite understand the consultant, but anyway, he has said we’d go 2 more cycles of chemo to consolidate the results.

Maybe I was over optimistic that I was at the end but best be sure to be sure (I’m Irish, I can say that… )

I am no good with medical speak either @dmquinlan but it is best to be sure, surely.

Had Cycle 8 on Thursday - and have been fine this weekend, no sickness or fatigue… consultation on 18th. I’ve asked for 3 week before next cycle - as another family wedding - this one, postponed 3 times due to the pandemic!

Great news @dmquinlan, good idea for the 3 week break before your next cycle.
I hope this family wedding goes brilliantly and is closer to home this time.
Enjoy and look after yourself and I look forward to hearing all about the wedding.

My 6 month update blog post…

Ride London tomorrow - excited - rest day today - final prep on bike (polish, lubricate… ensure what nuts & bolts are supposed to be tight are tight  )

I’m amazed by the support by family, friends, colleagues and those in my professional network (ok, contacts on LinkedIn) who have donated.

Raising awareness important - this week, I was interviewed for a company wide magazine. I work for Mercedes-Benz UK - so wide reach, and, no, sorry, I can’t get you Grand Prix tickets (usually the first question people ask… ) Will share when published.

Take care all!

At Mile 99 with the Blood Cancer Team - MrsQ was there to meet me too!

Completed in 6hrs 5mins.

Consultant call later today - expecting to be told off - his last words on previous call were to rest up…

Finally got around to updating my blog after the ride…

Thanks to the Blood Cancer UK team for some of the photographs!

In other news… I’m isolating at home again now with COVID - my first time with it. Fortunately, being on the high risk list, I was contacted by NHS COVID doctor and prescribed Paxlovid for 5 days.

Don’t feel too bad - just a bad “normal” cold - not coughing as much as I was Sunday/Monday now however I do sound like Darth Vader…

I’ve let my haematology team know so they have up to date info in my notes. My next consultation is in August - so no further treatment was required after my end of May consultation.
