Just after a bit of advice really. I have Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia ('CLL'). I’ve been on obinutuzumab and finished that treatment. I’m just on venetoclax now. I’ve been on it for 6 months with very few problems. I’ve not had any alcohol during treatment but I’m going away next week, and I’d love a glass of wine in the evening? Any advice? Thank you.
Hello @ELGall1996
Welcome to the forum and thank you for taking time to send in your post
I’m sorry to learn about your diagnosis.
I too am a Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia ('CLL') patient - but on active monitoring at the moment. My understanding is that you can generally drink alcohol in strict moderation if you have Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia ('CLL') and are not undergoing active treatment, but you should always consult your care team first.
Personally I have decided to only drink alcohol free, and have found a couple of nice IPAs that I often enjoy.
Take good care
Kind regards
Mike
Hi @ELGall1996
Bet you’re looking forward to getting away.
I would echo what Mike has said and check with your clinical team.
Last thing you want is to end up having a rough time.
Enjoy your break
I was told a glass of wine was fine on my treatment, but they absolutely said limit it to a couple, once or twice a week at most - I started treatment over Christmas, so I expect that question popped up a lot for them (different cancer different treatment though).
Your CNS should be able to tell you rather than having to wait for an appointment. If you are a wine drinker and they say no for any reason, there are some really good 0% available like @GenesisDevice said. The best deacoholized wines I’ve found are by Thomson & Scott and it’s ‘Noughty’ range, red, white & rose - if you’re a sparkling wine fan they even do 200ml bottles so you don’t waste any if you only want a glass. If you’re a gin fan Tanqueray make two excellent gins - chuck it with some fever tree you’d be hard pushed to tell the difference.
Although (and I don’t mean to be a party pooper here) the NHS states a limit of 14 units per week, it’s worth mentioning the World Health Organisation won’t state a limit because alcohol is a group 1 carcinogen, so technically there is no safe limit. I absolutely wasn’t aware of this before my diagnosis, which is why I am sharing.
Really hope you enjoy your break away @ELGall1996 xx
Thank you all for your comments. All good advice!!
