Hi everyone. I was diagnosed with Acute promyelocytic leukaemia (APL) leukaemia I March this year and after induction achieved remission and again after consolidation treatment, shown through the bone marrow tests and no sign of the p-rara gene. I finished last chemo about 12 weeks ago but since then my platelets and all bloods have been slow to recover. My platelets are at their highest today of 82 which is still not in normal range. I had my fibrogen level done today which was 3.3 normal as I understand it but my D-dimer was 1,300. I believe the range of normal is below 500. Back in May when tested last it was over 8,000 it I’m scared as to why it’s still high and abnormal if I’m in remission.
Could this mean I have relapsed?
Could this mean I g have developed DIC?
I have emailed nurse to ask questions but wondered if anyone has encountered high levels of this whilst cancer free and also if anyone else’s platelets were slow to recover? Thank you
Oh @Ruth79 I can hear the fear and anxiety in your post.
You have emailed your nurse to ask your questions and now the waiting is the worst feeling.
Unless someone has experienced something similar you are best awaiting your nurse as they will know your whole medical history etc.
Please let us know how you get on and in the meantime be very kind to yourself and look after yourself
Thank you for replying Erica. I am so worried. APL is so rare it’s hard to get real life info from people which makes it harder to know what’s normal and what’s not! X
Hi @Ruth79 I have been thinking of you and just wondered how you are doing?
I think personally there is no such thing as ‘normal’ because we are all wonderful unique human beings.
If there are any symptoms that you are concerned about, please do get it checked out with someone medical that knowns all about you as diagnosis takes into account so many things. If symptoms are really impacting on your life see if they can help you.
I attach a link to the Blood Cancer UK website .Acute promyelocytic leukaemia - what is it, symptoms and treatment | Blood Cancer UK in case you have not read it.
Have you heard back from your nurse yet?
Look after yourself and be kind to yourself
Hi @Ruth79, so sorry you’re going through this worrying time - did you nurse get back to you? Have you contacted your consultant and asked all of the questions you have? If not, we’d really encourage you to do so as you’re well within your rights to feel informed about your health. Would you find it helpful to talk things through over the phone with one of our Nurse Advisors for a bit of extra support?
