Does anyone have any advice on living with someone who takes Hydroxycarbamide? I have a new partner who takes the medication and I am getting some strange ‘side effects’. I cannot find much information online other than ‘don’t handle the drugs’ (I don’t) and that he should wear a condom. Thank you
Hi @Mummydidit Welcome to our forum and I am so glad that you have found us.
I don’t know but I hope someone will be able to share their experiences for you.
Perhaps your partner might also ask their medical team.
Perhaps it might be worth you seeing your GP and explaining your situation, it might be something completely unconnected we do not know.
Please do keep posting as our forum is for you to say how it really is for you.
Look after and be very kind to yourself.
Hello @Mummydidit, welcome to the forum. I’m sorry to read of your concerns about your partner taking hydroxyurea.
I take it every day and have been told by my haematologist that the risks to myself, let alone anyone else, from hydroxyurea are minimal. I was told that any potential risks or side effects have to be noted in the medicine’s precautions as hydroxyurea is a form of mild chemotherapy.
You’re right that your partner should use barrier methods to protect you, although there’s very little chance of his medicine affecting you.
For reference, hydroxyurea has been used by children diagnosed with sickle cell disease for decades and research shows that they don’t grow up to have greater incidences of cancers, despite taking this form of chemotherapy.
Perhaps, like @Erica suggests, you could see your doctor about those side effects. If it’s any comfort, they’re unlikely to be due to your partner’s hydroxyurea dosage if he’s using condoms, from what I’ve been told by specialists.
