Hi everyone, this is very difficult for me to put out there but I’m basically just wanting any kind of support at this point.
My partner of 14 years was diagnosed with APML on Wednesday morning (was told on Tuesday it was Leukemia but not which type), and sadly passed away on Thursday night.
This was an unbelievably big shock, we hadn’t dealt with the diagnosis properly yet and then everything that could go wrong, went wrong.
The consultant told us on Wednesday which type of Leukemia she had, and that she immediately needed to start ATRA, whilst stating that it can cause some breathing difficulties, Emma unfortunately had the most severe reaction to it and ended up on a ventilator in ICU. The same evening she had a large bleed on her brain which was untreatable due to the cancer and blood loss.
All I was reading prior to this was how it’s “very treatable” and knew she would be in for a rough ride, but to not even make it to giving Chemo a try is heartbreaking.
Have others in the group known of people passing so quickly after diagnosis? It’s so surreal.
I’m so sorry to read that you have lost your partner of 14 years within 1 day of diagnosis. This must have been devastating for you and both you and partners family.
My thoughts are with you all right now.
I’m not sure if you and your families have some support in place at present and it may be that you would like to talk with the wonderful @BloodCancerUK-SupportTeam
I’ve tagged them in this reply and you can call them for free on 0808 2080 888.
Do take care in what must be an incredibly difficult time for all of you.
Oh @Adampb92 I just do not know what to say, I just cannot imagine what you are going through losing Emma so quickly after her diagnosis.
An ‘unbelievably big shock’ just does not cover where all your thoughts and emotions must be right now. Yes, it must feel surreal.
I don’t know if anyone else on our forum will be able to relate to you. The reason I say this is I do not think many people would have the courage you have and think of posting.
@DuncanB has given you the Blood Cancer UK support Services details so please do not hesitate to ring them if you feel the need.
Ask for and accept all the help you can get and please do process your feelings on our forum.
Sending you virtual hugs and just give yourself time.
I’m so, so sorry to hear about your loss of Emma. I can only imagine what you’re going through - losing her so quickly and so unexpectedly must be completely devestating and disorientating. There are no words that make that better, and I won’t pretend otherwise, but I’m glad you found this forum and thank you for trusting us with something like this.
Heidi, one of our nurses, has sent you a direct message, and we do also have a page on losing a loved one. Cruse Bereavement Support is worth knowing about too - but there’s no rush for any of that, and I understand that sometimes what’s needed most is just space to be heard.
I’m thinking of you and Emma’s family. Please keep posting, whenever and however you need to.
I am so, so sorry for the devastating loss of your partner. To go from a diagnosis to losing her in just a couple of days is an unimaginable, heartbreaking shock, and my heart goes out to you.
Not the same but I lost my father very very suddenly when I was young without warning so I do understand what you are going through , nothing prepares you to lose someone.
I know that all too sadly other members in our community have also unfortunately experienced sudden unexpected losses like this, and that feeling of complete, surreal shock is something others here will understand.
You might find you are able to connect with others who have been through the loss of a loved one here on the forum:
We are all holding you in our thoughts and are here whenever you need to reach out.
