Hello everyone,
My mother is coming up to about a decade with Polycythaemia vera (PV) more or less and she has started having a lot of problems with skin peeling off her fingertips and back of her hands. Sometimes it is deep enough to bleed. They will go to the specialist, but I was wondering if anyone here has had to deal with this and what did you do?
Thanks in advance!
Emma
Hi @Emmahibou I hope someone on here might be able to share their experiences and I will copy your post to the Blood Cancer UK nurse advisors @BloodCancerUK_Nurses
Yes, it definitely sounds one for a specialist, please let us know how your mother gets on

Hi @Emmahibou sorry to hear this it sounds really uncomfortable for your mother. It’s good to hear she’s seeing her specialist soon as it’s important she gets the right advice for her individual circumstances and gets clarity on whether this is a symptom of the Polycythaemia vera (PV) or whether there is another reasons for her dry skin. Is your mum on any Polycythaemia vera (PV) treatment at the moment? They may want to do some investigations and check things like her thyroid and iron levels and/or they may refer her to a dermatologist. Hope you’re both doing okay.
Hi
I too have Polycythaemia vera (PV) and been diagnosed almost 3 years ago. Funny you mention that as I’ve just started to notice the same. I thought it maybe due to not being hydrated or need to apply more moisturiser but I’ll ask my Haemotologist during my next encounter
