Retirement

Hi there,

34 years since I started my first wee job as a 16 year old working at a Butchers within the office, ( a job that lasted 1 week and paid £60, going through working at Prudential, DSS, Cable and Wireless, Sky TV, Security, Tesco and a brief stint working within a Detention Centre, I am now retired. My health has finally dictated to me that I cant work in retail anymore. My back which has given me problems for years is telling me no more and time to relax. At the moment, my TLGL is not causing me any problems so no problem there. My aim is to have a wee break and perhaps try and go back to my first love which is administration work. Not gained enough in my pension to make it worthwhile so decided to cash it in so hopefully I’ll get a few grand which will help a lot with making my family more comfortable and the odd wee holiday, My wife is talking about going abroad on a camping trip, my step daughter wants to go to Alton Towers, I want to buy some more gadgets for my camera, the shopping list is endless. Still feel bad in that I feel I have been put on the scrapheap at 50. Loved working in retail and talking to people.

Oh @Jbeaver12 I am so glad that you are now finally retired and as the saying goes you open a new chapter in your lives.

Although you say that you would like to go back to administration work. I reckon you are so definitely a ‘people person’ and although I appreciate there is need to earn money I hope you do some more volunteering escapades too.

I wish you and your family every happiness for your new future, Please do keep us posted

Hi @Jbeaver12 ,

I’m sorry to hear that you’ve had to leave retail work, due to your health, when this is something you’ve enjoyed so much. I hope you’re able to find other roles that are more manageable, when the time is right.

In case it’s useful, we have lots of information about your rights and support at work on our money and work webpages: Blood cancer: money and work | Blood Cancer UK This covers topics like reasonable adjustments and what to do if you have problems at work. There is also information about financial support, which may relevant as you have had to stop working due to your health.

I hope you hear from other forum members about their experiences and for further support. You can also reach out to our support services team, if you need to talk things through: Blood cancer information and support by phone and email | Blood Cancer UK

Take care,

Tom
