Stem cell transplant

Hi. I am new to the forum. I have just finished my 4th cycle of DVTD and now have to decide whether to have a stem cell transplant or go down the route of medication. I have to give my answer to my medical team by Thursday next week, and I am so undecided, I thought I would see what others thoughts are. I know everybody’s experiences are different, but I’m just trying to get an overview before I go forward. Has anyone had a transplant and realised that it may not have been the right thing to do? Alternatively, has anyone gone down the medication line and wished they had gone for the transplant? I also can’t seem to get an answer about remission times for both, once again I know there are no specifics, but a ball park figure would be helpful.

Hi @Geri3
What condition do you have ?
I have myelofibrisis and on medication. Will be easier to understand the stem cell route if we know the condition. Kind regards
Nicola

Hi Nicki. Being new to this site I thought that as I filled in that information at the beginning it would appear on my post. Obviously this is not the case, sorry. I have Multiple Myeloma.

Hi @Geri3
I have been living with myeloma for 7 years and I have had two transplants.

Remissions times are individual to your myeloma
I can tell you that my first one gave me 4 years my second I’m 3 years post transplant.

The idea for a stem cell transplant is to deepen the remission time after initial treatment along with maintenance treatment after the transplant

Responses to treatment are also determined if your high risk for example you have a chromosomal defect eg T4-14

I have a close friend who is a year or so post DVD and didn’t want a transplant who is in remission with normal bloods.

Hi @Geri3 - welcome to our forum. I’m so glad that you found us. Thank you for sharing - it is understandable that you are undecided. I have a different blood cancer, but I’m sure others with similar experiences will share their stories, but as you say we are all different.

Have you had a conversation with your medical team to get an understanding of the different options or gone to them with questions that you might have to help you reach a decision? Or if you would like to talk anything through with one of our nurses over the phone or via email, you can get in touch on 0808 2080 888 or via support@bloodcancer.org.uk.

Take care and let us know how you get on.
Maggie
