Hi my Mum has just finished her second round of chemo after the first one she was given allopurinol but this round she wasn’t? What’s everyone’s experience?

Good to hear your Mum has had second round of Chemotherapy.
Hopefully managed okay with it.
I had Allopurinol during one of my treatment cycles.
If memory serves me correctly it was when I started the Azacitidine and Venetoclax combination of chemotherapy.
I had first cycle as an inpatient and I believe they were watching for signs of tumour lysis syndrome.
I don’t recall being on it long term.
It might be worth checking with your Mum’s Haematology Team if you have concerns

Thanks for the reply @DuncanB mums chemo went well she had a piccline put in earlier this week so it was much easier for the nurses to administe the chemo drugs. Last time she had two burt veins and a red line where the vein had been seriously irritated. So all went much smoother this time. Yes of course ugh I really do need to start listening to my instincts more.

Hi @rach45
PICC line makes a huge difference when it comes to chemotherapy and having blood taken so that should help your Mum.
I sometimes found that day after cleaning the line site I was wiped out and slept a lot.
Not sure why but thought worth mentioning.

@rach45 my hubby had RCHOP last year and had Allupurinol during first cycle like the other responder and your mum. It was given to reduce the possibility of tumour lysis as already mentioned. It was not given during the further 5 cycles. It is important to be aware of all the drugs that make up the regimen or are prescribed alongside it. I found i needed to correct a number of issues along the way drug wise and was grateful I’d paid such close attention. Well that and his side effects showed an issue with drugs missing. Wishing you and your mum well, and everyone else too

I had Allopurinal for my first induction cycle only. I was told it would only be for one cycle as my body got used to the medication and pushed out a lot more uric acid, so for me, it was used to prevent gout. They were big tablets and quite hard to swallow I recall, so was happy to see the back of them!
@judesadventures is bang on with her advice, it’s one to definitely check with mums medical team.

Hi all,
Just an update - mum called her haematology nurses and they’ve said the same. She just needed to take them for her first session. Big relief.
