Hi all, ive been refered to haematology as my platelets have ranged between 500-600 for the last 10 months. Orginally i was referred to clinical haematology that appoinment got cancelled and now the appointment got re made with a myeliod Haematologist. Ive had an ultrasound scan of my abdomen. My head is all over the place as i stupidly googled things. My appointment is in 19 days. Many thanks
Firstly welcome @Gemgemzr85 to the forum and thanks for posting
I think it’s only natural to be concerned when you see abnormal levels from a blood test or told so my a doctor but it’s wait for further discussion or tests that can drive your mind doolally.
Do you treat it as concerned and start preparing for the worst or are you ok to think if you’re feeling fine then it’s ok to carry on as normal?
You just want answers.
High platelets can be a sign of something it can be a sign of nothing with a quick fix. As everyone is different it’s hard to say but how you’re feeling is totally natural and understandable.
I don’t want to comment as I’m not a medical professional but some people may read that if you’re not seen seen urgently then it’s not a major concern or that they are giving you ample time period to check again and see if the high platelet count is still high and consistent and do another test? Blood tests can be tainted based on lots of things and you would hope that any conclusion given to you is true rather based on a one off event.
I believe if you’re physically feeling ok then it’s ok to carry on until you eventually speak to your medical team else if you’re not and /or your mind is is going into overdrive definitely try and speak to your gp to see if there is anything they can do to offer advice support or chase things up for you.
The bcuk support line are great for support and advice and have trained nurses at hand too
Hi @Gemgemzr85 . It’s only natural in this day and age to turn to Dr Google while we’re waiting for a referral and so go easy on yourself. Nothing “stupid” about doing that…
However there may be many causes of high platelet levels and until the haematologist has carried out tests they won’t be able to advise on your particular circumstances.
If you can, I’d suggest giving google a rest for the moment. I have no evidence to back this up other than my own gut, but I feel that when reading about medical conditions over the net we have a tendency to gravitate towards “worst case” scenarios. And this can cause us undue worry. This forum is a good resource because on the whole it is used by people who are themselves experiencing blood conditions and their treatment, many of whom have years and years of experience in living (well!) with their conditions and who can give level-headed, positive advice and support. (Although always from their own perspective and bearing in mind that they are not medically qualified.)
I wish you well with your upcoming consultation. Very very best.
Ive had an ultrasound on my abdomen. My inflammation markers and infection markers are normal on blood. Its my platelets that are just out of normal range. Thank you for your reply
