Hello @Unclejack,
I am so sorry to read of your repeated appointment cancellations.
I’ve had two thoughts about this, firstly you could trying calling the Haematology secretary and/or the nurse team, to make them aware this keeps happening to you.
In the Hospital I used to work at, the appointments were done by an external agency and the Haematology team had no idea the appointments kept being cancelled, it was a long time before we realised and the Consultants had to tell them not to do it. They were to contact them first to get it agreed if they wanted to swap/cancel appointments due to the ‘reactive’ nature of the different blood cancers and conditions, as they knew the patient’s best.
Secondly, you could report your experiences to Healthwatch. They are an independent organisation that feedback to the NHS. This link Healthwatch website explains what they do.
Fingers crossed for you that you don’t have any more cancellations.
Take care and best wishes, Heidi.
That’s shocking news, but explains a lot. So far I have not had any appointments cancelled, I suppose each individual hospital has its own policy.
It’s certainly worth checking up constantly to see that your Haematologist wishes are adhered to, and not to rely on outside agency sources.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention as it is a very serious issue in my book, as we are talking life or death in some cases.
Regards Ron
@Erica
Morning Erica
You really have to have a sense of humour when dealing with the NHS. My wife received a appointment cancellation letter BEFORE being granted a appointment. Now that must take some beating! On a more serious note OUR NHS is overwhelmed. Annoyingly the media and politicians blame the elderly and sick for living to long as the cause. I suppose we elderly and ill are a easy target.
Best wishes
Unclejack.
Hi @Unclejack your wife has trumped me!!!
I agree Unclejack, there appears to be some hostility, by some youngers, towards the elderly, which in some cases is almost Palpable.
Just to update on the cholesterol situation after 2 months of statins my cholesterol has reduced from 7.8 to 4.9. Over the moon with that. Have my next haematology appointment on 12 th December so let’s see how things are Hope everyone is doing ok and looking forward to the festive season. I am on shift Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day
Gosh @KayC those statins seem to have been doing their job well. I know people have varying feelings about them, my husband has been on them for years.
Please do let us know how your appointment goes on 12th December.
How do you feel about being on shift Christmas Eve and New Years Day?
Again I am fully aware that the festive season can be a very difficult time for many.
Look after yourself and please keep posting
To be honest Erica I’m not happy at all about my shifts. I have been on call either Christmas Eve or Christmas Day for the last 3 years and I asked for Christmas off this year as all the family are coming over We were asked for our preference and I volunteered to work NYE Given I’m 62 have done my fair share for the last 45 years and only work one shift a week now and never get off on time I thought that was proportionate given that some of the younger girls work full time. But I’ve been given two of the major shifts ! I will just get on with it and hope it’s quiet I sound like a bah humbug which I’m not I just believe in fairness.
Morning I’ve read all of these posts with interest as my cholesterol is HIGH 7.4 I am fit was a triathlete prior to chemo now I practice yoga daily in the last three years I have been a vegetarian.
My Dad died of a sudden heart attack at 52 I’m 53 , my mum has high cholesterol and takes statins . It has been suggested it is genetic! My gp just mentions it but has never discussed treatment yet ! But everytime I go to hospital they tell me my gp should be treating it . Thanks all for the reminder:)
@Erica
Hi Erica. Toothache subsided before I got to dentist. So no action yet. After the dentist visit completely out of the blue a dreadful cold showed up! This morning beginning to improve.
I did take a COVID test which was negative. Then a small lymph node swelled in my jaw same side as my toothache. I think it is linked to the toothache perhaps a infection. What worries me I have blood test Thursday
and these problems may cause a poor result. Perhaps not. Hopefully.
Perhaps you may have some experience of similar problems?
Best wishes
Uncle Jack
Oh @Unclejack if it is not one thing it is another.
Funnily enough I was thinking about you today and wondering how you were.
I think we are very complex beings and everything is interconnected.
If something does show up on your blood test perhaps your GP, if they know what has been going on, might be able to see if you have got an infection and need antibiotics.
Please do let us know how you get on.
Be kind to yourself
Well had my haematology review on Tuesday and bloods remain stable so I’m
Over the moon. Going to have next review in 9 months
I think the genetic link is well known and just with my nurses head on I would say with your cholesterol level and family history statins would definitely be indicated. Maybe time to get assertive with your GP ? Best of luck
Thank you @KayC I am on patches as we speak asking for a cholesterol check:)
Oh @KayC I am so happy for you, perhaps now relax and celebrate, yes, over the moon probably describes you perfectly.
That’s great news @KayC!
