I was wondering if anyone could share their experiences of hospice at home care or being admitted to a hospice. We are trying to make decisions for my dad. Our local hospice is Saint Francis in Romford.
I think although he would rather be at home and mentally that would be better for him, physically it would be better for him to be in the hospice. And I think it would probably be better for my mum (and selfishly me too).
For context he is 82 and has Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. No other conditions, but he keeps getting infection after infection and being readmitted to hospital.
Oh @Ilona it is a dilemma for you and perhaps be guided by the hospice, hospital staff and GP.
I would certainly not try and sway you in any direction, the decision has to be all of yours but perhaps a pros and cons list of emotions, medical, physical and practicalities might help slightly,
I think my experiences are that you are in a non win situation.
Also the great importance of really looking after yourself you must be absolutely completely exhausted.
Please do use here or the Blood Cancer UK support line on 0808 2080 888 if you want a chat.
Please do keep posting
I think that’s the best thing.
Visit the hospice and see for yourself
Quality of everyone’s life is important too.
I would also have a conversation with dad if he is willing about what he wants and maybe he could visit to have a look around
Do they do day visits?
Do they do a lunch time or have a cafe
Hi @Ilona. I can see you have already been given really good advice. It must be a very difficult situation to be in. Please keep us updated on how you get on with the hospice. Sending lots of love X
