Recent diagnosis CMML

Hi @Unclejack Thankyou for your message & yes really interesting re the MRI. The neurology consultant said they’d probably happened in the last few years. He said that TIA’s often don’t show up on MRIs but minor or silent strokes will. And that’s really interesting about drinking water in the morning, thank you. I’d heard about that at night but not in the morning. Not a bad thing to do at both times I guess. Thanks again for your best wishes. Hoping the procedure will be done next week :crossed_fingers: Take care x

@ChrissyD My husband is nodding his head at your account of hospital stays! The beeping of machines was driving him a bit crazy  And being forced to have breakfast at some silly hour! Having said that there was a lot of camaraderie on the ward. Quite touching at times to see others in worse conditions. And all the staff were amazing & very thorough in their monitoring. I have passed on your birthday wishes to him. Thank you! Crikey, lots happening for your family in June! Enjoy celebrating
Fingers crossed, we heard today that the hospital are ‘working towards’ procedure for next Thursday 12th, although not been confirmed yet. Here’s hoping :crossed_fingers: Thanks again & take care x

@Sisi I hope the op goes ahead next week. Thoughts with you and your husband and happy belated birthday to him! My birthday is also in June @ChrissyD ! Had our teams call with Dr Wiseman yesterday. What a great guy! Explained everything so well and didn’t rush at all. We are happy now with the ‘active monitoring’ and my husband has to try and put this to one side and live a healthy active life. He keeps saying that’s easier said than done and I get that but he’s going to work on it. The healthy active bit comes naturally anyway, it’s just the knowing you have it! That pesky mutation ASXL1 could cause problems in the future but not to worry about now. All in all a great appointment and like you @Sisi we asked for another appointment/call in 6 months time. @Unclejack how’s your leg and foot? Best wishes to all x

Hi @Logsie
That’s great news about your consultation with Dan Wiseman. He really lives up to his name doesn’t he?! Certainly as far as Chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia (CMML) is concerned. Yeah, these darned mutations. :face_with_symbols_on_mouth: No one quite knows when or if anything will change on the mutation front and tbh nobody can do anything about it anyway so the advice to try not to think about it is right -even if, as your husband rightly says, it’s now hard to un-know!

My KRAS mutation hadn’t changed since it was first “discovered” over 5 years ago and nobody even knows whether it’s been there for longer as the Next Gen Sequencing tests weren’t there 17 years ago!

All I can say to your husband is that pushing this out of your mind does get easier with time. Allotment and gardening therapy has worked for me and weeding makes your mind go a complete blank-just focusing on the end result!! Also being with our grandchildren means that I don’t have mental space to think my own thoughts whilst they are all talking at you at the same time!:joy::joy:

Whatever floats his boat but it’s good that he’s already committed to healthy active lifestyle. :+1:t3::+1:t3:

Take care

Hi @Logsie Thank you so much for your best wishes. He’s enjoying being pampered by me & the cat! Not so good waiting for this procedure but I can’t control that :face_with_diagonal_mouth:
I am soooo pleased you had such a good appointment with Dan Wiseman! Isn’t he amazing! I didn’t want to leave his consultation room when we had ours. Infact I nearly found myself going to hug him! And yes pesky mutations like @ChrissyD has said! I also agree with Chrissy that you do come to terms with the diagnosis, I think you learn to be more accepting of it, even if that’s only just a little bit.
Enjoy that bit of weight that must’ve been lifted from both of your shoulders. Sending you both hugs xx

Hi Logsie, my leg and foot are still extremely painful. Still very swollen, 3 inches difference in circumference compared to the left leg. The massive bruising has cleared but the burning sensation redness and warmth are still there. Doctor gave me a week’s.course of antibiotics I think all that achieved was to wreck the gut microbiome which is vital for the immune system and vital in the battle against all cancers. Now consuming copious amounts of natural yoghurt, cheese, and probiotics to try and repair the damage. Get very little sleep, and have been told that this injury may take another few weeks to settle. Had to leave painkillers out (paracetamol reacts with the antibiotics I was prescribed) Hard to believe that this will settle.
Another problem couldn’t get a G.P appointment for three days? I was given a little card to give to clinicians stating i was vulnerable to sepsis etc. and required immediate attention. Reception not interested until nhs111 intervened and managed to persuade them to allow me a appointment. NHS 111 have been excellent. I apologise for ranting but pain doesn’t encourage a more reasoned response. I don’t think this is going to end well.
Perhaps I have a very low pain threshold!
Anyway see what the next few weeks brings. Haemotology blood test in a fortnight then consultation a week later. Sorry very depressed mainly because I can’t do any gardening, and having to let the wife do everything. Never mind a few whisky’s may help me sleep. I think lack of sleep is the main problem along with the attitude of some receptionists at the GPs.
Sorry once again for ranting but lack of sleep and pain are not good bedfellows.
Best wishes unclejack.

Oh @Unclejack These things can happen so quickly and take so long to get better from.
I agree with you lack of sleep and pain (and my head) are not goodfellows and in the words of the Mamas and Papas (and others) the darkest hour is just before dawn.
As my mother used to say ‘time is a great healer’
We are here for you to say how it really is for you and having a good old rant
Really look after yourself and be very kind to yourself

Hi Erica thanks for the support. I’ve just been a bit low lately, I’ll get over it. You mention one of my all time favourite groups. What a era that was absolute classics. I was just perusing through music on U.tube. came across what I thought was a magnificent tribute by a young family group to second world war veterans. I’d never heard of them but their rendition of the LORD OF THE RINGS song was stunning as was the video. The song is 'The Last Goodbye ’ by the group ‘life in 3D’ haunting but magnificent.
Quite a few long gone veterans in my family some who never came back and others who did and passed away in old age. My late father was present at Normandy and was wounded in Belgium his brother was killed in Holland and buried at the war cemetery at Nijmegen. And hear I am making a big stink over a sprained ankle! I now feel totally ashamed! May all the veterans rest in peace.
Very best wishes unclejack.

@Unclejack Don’t ever apologise. And in my mind you’re not ranting. I hope you can rest well tonight. You’ve been through a lot recently. And it’s horrible when we can’t do the things we love doing. Sending love & best wishes to you. And I think whiskey sounds like a great idea :+1: :slightly_smiling_face: :tumbler_glass:

@Unclejack rant away! Important to get it off your chest. Nothing worse than being in pain and lack of sleep. Make sure you rest and sleep when you can. You’re not missing great weather in the garden anyway! Can’t believe it’s June and I’m still wearing a jacket and holding an umbrella! Take good care of yourself.
