Surgery with ET

I was diagnose with essential thrombocytopemia in march 2024. I have been waithing for a orthopedic appointment fir a very painful bunion since January 2024
My question is, would it be safe or advisable to have surgery which is mainly for comfort rather than nevvessary. Opions please

Hi @jules64.
I sympathise. Bunions are so painful!
I think that’s definitely a question for your medical team. Hopefully they can give you all the information you need to make an informed decision. Are you able to speak to them?

Hello there @jules64, sorry to read of that painful bunion and awaiting its operation. While I have Polycythaemia vera (PV) rather than Essential thrombocythemia (ET), I’ve asked my haematologist about whether to continue taking medicines should I need surgery, for example a tooth extraction.

I take hydroxyurea and aspirin and have thin blood usually, but I was told to stop taking the hydroxyurea 2-3 days before any operation and to start taking it again afterwards that day.

If you take a cytoreductive medicine like hydroxyurea or interferon perhaps check about pausing doses during an operation with your specialist just to be sure, or maybe the lovely Blood Cancer UK nurses @BloodCancerUK-SupportTeam might be able to advise?

Thank you fir your replies, i will discuss it on mo day with my cns, if it was a serious operation i wouldn’t query it, but in my mind its for comfort n9t necessity.
