Told by consultant she could discharge me from getting blood tests for CLL (Diagnosed July 2024)

The hospital consultant I have seen for blood test results told me that she could discharge me? The only peace of mind I get since being diagnosed on 31st July 2024 is a blood test every 6 months. My next one is September 3rd 2025. I just want a blood test every 6 months for my own peace of mind? That same consultant called me into the hospital back in June 2024 which was meant to be to tell me which Leukemia I had? The day before I was a Zomby trying to prepare myself for the diagnosis, I went into the hospital for my diagnosis that Consultant let me sit down and told me ‘You will not be getting your diagnosis today as someone in the NHS sent off the wrong bloods.’ I was utterly shocked! I said to that consultant 'Why did you not telephone me to let me know I would not recieve my diagnosis today? I got up and walked out in disgrace, as I had worked myself up to recieve my diagnosis. That same consultant did not answer why no one called me to say my bloods had been lost, and that I needed to get some more bloods for another test. I had to wait 11 weeks 2 days to finally receive my diagnosis.
Can anyone tell me if I have the right to have a blood test done once every 6 months with Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL)? As I am not receiving any treatments.

Hi @Plobdule

I don’t know the answer to whether they can discharge you but you do have the right to request to see a different doctor if you don’t feel listened to , perhaps your GP could pick up the tests if there is not another consultant in your area
I would have a conversation with your GP either way , they maybe able to offer some clarity and discuss options with you

The other thing I would do especially if I felt that I wasn’t being heard is put in a complaint to PALS
They will also seek clarification and look at supporting you to find answers to your questions

I hope you are okay and get some answers that help

Take care

Hi @Plobdule,

Sorry to hear about the poor experience you have had with your consultant. You are well within your rights to ask to see another consultant and complain about the care you have received.

Follow up is recommended for all people living with Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) but this can vary. The frequency of follow up will depend on how stable your bloods are and if you have symptoms. If your bloods are very stable and you have no symptoms, it is suggested that follow up occurs every 6 months, or annually. This can happen either with haematology team or via the GP.

I hope this information helps.
Kind regards

Thank you Fiona (Support Services Nurse) your information does help me very much.
I first went into Same Day Emergency Unit (Sent in by my Doctor) due to swollen leg, and lump on my leg (Which is still there.) Was told May 13th 2024 in Same Day Emergency Unit they were checking for blood clot, they took my bloods. After 11 hours waiting was called into a room by lady wearing white overall who told me she thinks I have Leukemia, but I don’t need to worry as you can live for years with Leukemia. Apparently I was later told by Cancer and Haematology that lady in Same Day Emergency Unit should not have told me she thought I had Leukemia, she was not qualified to do that and should have referred me onto Haematology Unit. I did make a complaint to PALS, and did make a complaint. I then had bloods taken at Cancer and Haematology who arranged a day for me to go back to hospital for Diagnosis of which Leukemia I had. That same consultant did not let me know I was not going to have my diagnosis that day before that very appointment. I went in for my Diagnosis the same consultant said ‘I cannot give you your diagnosis today because someone in the NHS has sent the wrong bloods off.’ I couldn’t believe what she was telling me, I said why did no one let me know someone sent the wrong bloods off for me? I had been waiting over 8 weeks? Surely it is not necessary to let me still come in thinking I would have a diagnosis that appointment? I walked out, I was so shocked, angry, and couldn’t believe how I was being treated? I answered the phone still angry after walking out and said I would come in the next day to have new bloods taken, and wait some more. I finally had my diagnosis on 31st July 2024. It didn’t start off well with that same consultant I last went in February 2025 for blood tests, she then told me ‘I could discharge you?’ I was not being rude to her, I do not understand why she cannot be empathic with me. My next bloods appointment is September 2025 with her. Not looking forward to it! I do sleep a lot, feel tired, have had 2 illnesses which seemed to linger on for over 3 weeks in March and May 2025. Also have just seen my Doctor last week with an very itchy rash (which he looked at and said he didn’t understand what the rash was, it was not insect bites, put me on antibiotic creams (Which have helped the raised red sort of blobs? on my neck.) I have become paranoid now as why did I have that horrible rash? Sorry this is so long Fiona but it is a sort of therapy for me, I do hope you do not mind.

Hi @Plobdule,

Thank you for sharing your story with me. Its important to express how you are feeling and I do not mind at all

Please do ask to see another doctor at your next appointment in September, you could speak to the haematology secretaries about arranging this for you. If it would helpful to talk things through with the nurses before your appointment, we would be very happy to do so on 0808 2080 888

Take care
