Accessing the Autumn Booster (6th Vaccine Dose)

P.S. I’ve booked both our flu jabs at Boots chemist as Drs Surgery hasn’t even put the dates up yet for their mass flu surgery dates. They’re not till 2nd Oct so if surgery do have dates sooner I’ll cancel.

I’ve just posted about booking on the Govt/NHS website, was very easy.

Where are you based please? As I’ve booked my husband for this Sat via official Gov/NHS website, unable to book yet for me though. Do you think this will be the original version? I’d really prefer him to have the new bi valiant version.

Husband has had x5 and no ABs but we’ve booked his 6th as hopefully it will give a T cell response.

I’m in Kent. We get our first vaccine delivery on Monday of new vaccine, i wonder if the delay is due to us getting new vaccine?
GP surgeries tend to get Flu vaccinations later than pharmacy as they are massive chains and have more buying power so get them first. Flu income is crucial to most surgeries and with costs increasing but the funding not, it will become even harder.

Hope you get the new vaccine type.

If the vaccines are not tested on immunocompromised how did they know only to give us half a dose of the original Moderna as a booster.?

Managed to book my autumn booster (6th vaccine) today. I am under 75, but immunocompromised. Lots of appointments from next Monday onwards. It will be interesting to see which vaccine I’m given.
Will Blood Cancer put some information on the web site or send an email to prompt others, who may have to wait a good while before they receive any information from their GP!

I will copy Blood Cancer UK for you @BloodCancerUK_Nurses
Good to hear that there are lots of appointments from next Monday.

Thank you, Erica. It may just help others to know that you can book via the NHS vaccine site, rather than waiting for a GP to contact you (if of course, they even do that).

I went to Coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccination - NHS yesterday and easily booked the 6th dose for next Monday. Just need to take proof of immunosupression. Can’t say I’m looking forward to it as I’ve spent 2 days in bed 5 times now which was worse than Covid itself! But there’s a lot of Covid out there so I won’t be taking any risks.

Cancelled husbands vaccine for 3rd Sept as he was bit unwell after second Shingrix vac. Found out that it would of been the original Moderna one anyway as the site wasn’t using bivalent vac until 12th Sept. So he will wait a bit before booking (we are away in our caravan so will be after 15th at least). This is in Norfolk so not sure if other sites having stocks sooner.

They are normally very good about prompting me to book myself in but having said that my hospital switched over to face to face appointments for the first time in almost 3 years a couple of weeks ago and didn’t tell anyone. I’d had my appointment for yesterday set up a couple of months ago and I was left to work it out for myself by the fact that I hadn’t had a text telling me that it would be by phone.

My husband got a message to say he could book his autumn booster as he is over 75. I didnt get a message even though i zm eligble, being immunosuppressed. I have managed to book mine for 24th September. Very easy to do despite no message.

It will be interesting to know if people who have booked without the invitation actually get the vaccine.
I had a text from my GP to get a booster, when I went down there I was refused due having had 5 vaccines previously. My last one was the spring one in April.
I explained the situation showed them the information from Blood Cancer UK but none of this made any difference!
They know I have blood cancer!
Feeling really frustrated as once again I find myself having to fight to protect myself!

Hello @AnnD,
I am really sorry to hear that you were refused your 6th vaccine having been invited via text by your GP. It is especially disappointing as you had evidence of your diagnosis and the information from us here at Blood Cancer UK.
I will certainly take this case back to out COVID steering group and mention the issue you have experienced.
Would it be possible for you to direct message @Alice_BloodCancerUK your diagnosis and the name of the surgery as we would to take these cases forward?
From the point of view of getting the 6th vaccine I would suggest booking it online where you can get it from a vaccine centre or pharmacy. Is this something you can do?
Do give us a call if you need to discuss this further: Blood cancer information and support by phone and email | Blood Cancer UK
Take care

There seems to be some confusion about my vaccine record. The system my GP uses was only showing that I had 3 vaccines, I think this is why I received a text from them originally.
It was only when the person giving the vaccine was confirming my record that the discrepancy showed up. I shouldn’t have said anything and they would have given it to me. It was only when I said that I had had 5 vaccines that the queries started.
I explained to them why I had 5 vaccines and said I was now due the Autumn booster, which is what I had booked for. I showed them the information from yourselves but this didn’t make any difference. My GP said they were only giving 5th vaccines not 6th, they told me they couldn’t give it to me unless I had an invitation from the NHS or a letter from my consultant saying it was ok for me to have another one. They are fully aware of my Waldenstrom’s! It would seem that my GP is not aware of the guidance from the NHS.
I really don’t see why I have to jump through hoops again to get the vaccine I’m eligible for.
I will email Alice with the full story. My GP is the nearest place to me to get the vaccine, they run a vaccine clinic for local surgeries so I feel it’s important that they understand the situation for blood cancer patients. A bit bizzare considering it’s Blood Cancer Awareness month!
