Last week I had just finished my 3rd cycle of chemotherapy when I came down with a chest infection. My haematologist consultant told me to get to the hospital as soon as possible so I could get intravenous antibiotics.
Within 6hrs of starting the iv I was tested for Covid and was positive. I then spent 5 days in the intensive care unit before being discharged. I was due to start radiotherapy at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge yesterday but I had to cancel all of this weeks appointments.
It sounds like you have had a really horrible and scary couple of weeks and it must be very frustrating to have to delay your radiotherapy.
Have tou been told when it might be able to start? Waiting is just so frustrating. How are you managing?
My radiotherapy starts next Monday.
It’s been fun and games trying to arrange transport but luckily there’s a very good patient transport company who are taking me for all 15 days of treatment. Driving myself is out of the question as I’m not fit enough to manage the 1 hour drive.
Oh @MikeW what a time you have had and it sounds like good advice to get to hospital as soon as possible.
I reckon you were probably not feeling up to it but you seen to have done brilliantly organising your hospital appointments and transport.
Please do let us know how you get on when you feel up to it, the main thing is that you really be kind and look after yourself
That’s a good service!
Started radiotherapy today, 1 down 14 to go.
They are concentrating the therapy on my palette, the mask is a very tight fit, I’m glad I don’t suffer from claustrophobia. It’s been a while since I went through the treatment/side effects with the staff, because every tooth in my lower jaw hurts and my mouth seems to have stopped producing saliva. After asking Dr. Google I see that a dry mouth is a common side effect but this usually comes on a week or so into the treatment.
On a lighter note, my son-in-law has recently finished a sponsored cycle ride from Lands End to John O’groats and raised over £1400 for MacMillan Support.
Hi @MikeW perhaps your medical team can help with your side effects.
Please do congratulate your son in law in his fundraising triumph.
Look after yourself @MikeW you are going through a lot, but please do keep letting us know how you are doing
Just to say thinking of you MikeW in coming weeks
I had radiotherapy to the head and neck and the mask took a little while to get used to. I still have it in my loft.
I also suffered dry mouth - it’s not nice but does improve after treatment.
Take good care of yourself and keep us updated.
That’s an amazing amount of money to be raised!
