Dental implants

I didn’t have implants but I have got dentures which became a factor before my Zometa treatment which affects the jaw bones. I was told that my jaw was sort of ok but there was a bit fragility in one area and they gave me the choice of whether to have it treated or not given there was a small risk of having to have teeth removed after the treatment. I opted not to complicate matters and just have the Zometa.

Hi Lulu,
I posted the original post regarding implants.
I did go ahead with the implant after much anguish over whether it was going to go ok.
As the extraction and implant was in the upper jaw I was told I needed a bone graft as well. As I can only have irradiated blood products, due to chemo, as was concerned about the material used in the bone graft. After researching and asking a lot of questions of the dentist I took all the information to the hospital I’m under. After a lot of going back and forth it was decided that I could go ahead, but needed a blood test before the extraction/implant to check for clotting and platelet count. Also antibiotic coverage before and after.
I had it done at the end of July, the extraction/bone graft/implant post all done at the same time. I’m currently having to wait now until the bone around the implant has grown sufficiently to secure it. Can be anything from a 6 months+. I’m having a scan for the crown part in January, keeping my fingers crossed.
Mine is only one tooth, but it’s just where I need to chew, and as I have the gap at the moment am glad I chose to have the implant and look forward to having the crown bit fitted.
Yes dentistry has moved on and I have a friend who had all her top teeth done in one go!
It’s not without discomfort and having to modify your diet but the other options weren’t great. Only you can decide whether it will be worth laying out the money. I already have an implant that was done about 7 years ago, before I was diagnosed. I have never regretted it.
Don’t know if this helps if you want to ask anymore questions feel free.
All the best

Thank you for such an informative response and it’s good to hear your implant went well. I have decided to go with the two implants on one side to fill one gap in my lower jaw and see how this goes. If successful I could have one to fill the other gap but as long as I can chew on one side I will be happy. My dentist is to contact my GP to discuss best antibiotics in my case and will liaise with the implant specialist so I have confidence in them that they recognise the risks and will take the best course of action.

Hi @AnnD and @Lulu1221 thank you so much for both your posts and your positive thoughts and experiences regarding implants, very interesting and I look forward to reading about ongoing experiences.
Really take care of yourselves, I just loved my hot tinned custard and ice cream when my mouth was rather tender initially!!!

Hi all, A really interesting topic. My dentist always seems totally uninterested that I have FL, but I will keep all your advices in mind if I ever need any major dentistry.

hi @Targetwo welcome to posting on our forum sounds as if your team were amazing.
I have just been put on 2 different medications both for unconnected conditions and have been told I need to have regular dental check ups whilst on them.
I would be interested to know more about you and which blood cancer you have.
Please do keep posting as you have helped with your experiences already.
