Hey,
My Uncle aged 55 years has been diagnosed with Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML)-M3. He is under treatment in one of the hospital in Pakistan. The doctor has started Immunotherapy for which the 2nd cycle has been completed. Now the doctor has informed that he will be going for Bone Marrow Transplant. We have been unsuccessful to find the match.
I am writing to get some information regarding any possibility for his treatment in UK that to include the Bone Marrow Transplant. In this regard, can you please let me know regarding the cost of the treatment and possibility of any match for the transplant.
Just to remind he is Pakistani by nationality and residence that might effect the overall cost calcuation.
Hello @kashif
Welcome to the Forum. I am sorry to read about your Uncle and his diagnosis of Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). I hope you and your family are getting good support.
Unfortunately, we do not have any specific information on costings for treatment within the UK, as there are too many factors and variables to be able to inform you correctly. For example the treatment needed before the transplant can be different, the transplant type and also his own recovery times and length of stay in hospital.
However, this page on the Cancer Research UK website is very informative and outlines some valuable considerations: CRUK/overseasvisitors/treatment that you can share with your family.
Large treating hospitals in the UK often have guidance on their websites for international patients who are looking to access private treatment and care in the UK, including information on how to start the referral and consultation process. You may want to contact a hospital directly.
In case it’s helpful for you, this NHS webpage allows you to search for consultants, departments and hospitals in the UK: nhs.uk/service-search/other-services. As an example, if you type in ‘haematology’ and a location, it will bring up all the hospitals with haematology departments nearby.
Two of the largest teaching hospitals here in the UK for haematological oncology treatment facilities are The Christie in Manchester (www.christie.nhs.uk), and the Royal Marsden in London (www.royalmarsden.nhs.uk). Again, you may wish to contact them yourself and ask.
With regards to a transplant information DKMS, a charity that promotes awareness and has information on stem cell donation, have more information and overseas contacts: DKMS/aroundtheworld
Hopefully some of this information and the links are helpful to you. Do get back in touch if we can support you further. You can also call our support line if you wish to talk anything through: 0808 2080 888
Take care, Heidi.
