Lockdown and shielding

@Mandypandy hope this works out ok for you. Any signs of any kind of virus at the moment must be worrying. Do keep us up to date on how you’re getting on and when you know more.

Thank you all for your lovely comments and support while I was waiting for the virus test results. Fortunately the test was negative. I can’t tell you how relieved I am. The worry of passing any virus on to John is always in my mind, but this virus is just so dangerous.

Love to you all

That’s brilliant news @Mandypandy. How are you feeling now?

So glad to hear this @Mandypandy!

I’m so sorry to hear your husband’s letter hasn’t arrived - it sounds so stressful for you both! An online GP appointment sounds like a really good idea so he can talk it through with them! If people are struggling to get letters and their treatment/check ups are managed by their GP, then they’re encouraged to speak to their GP if they haven’t received a letter (and something which might help with those conversations is this infosheet - https://media.bloodcancer.org.uk/documents/GP_Letter_for_Shielders_in_England.pdf

If a person’s care/treatment is managed by hospital team, then their hospital team would be best placed to talk to about this.

Thanks so much @Alice_BloodCancerUK for the info sheet and for clarifying in your last paragraph where people should go for assistance if they have not received letters.

Hi all I just wanted to share some information we learned today from the Department of Health, which might be helpful for those who haven’t yet received letters -
Everyone who is expecting a letter should have received one now. …If they still have not received one, they can contact splquery@nhs.net to request a new letter. SPL Query can email the individual their letter and they can print it out.’

Wow @Alice_BloodCancerUK, that new information from the Department of Health will help so many people and put their minds at rest. I bet they will be busy.

Thank you so much @Alice_BloodCancerUK, I’ll get John to email them to see if we can get his letter.

That certainly seems much more proactive of them than last time.

Hi All,
I received the first letter about 3 weeks into the first lockdown.
I also received a letter later into the lockdown saying I no longer needed to shield. But I’ve not received a letter, email or text this time round.
Just emailed the contact from @Alice_BloodCancerUK.
See what they say.

My husband emailed the contact that Alice shared on here for the NHS. They emailed back asking for further info like his NHS number then emailed to say he wasn’t on the list and if he thought he should be, he must get in touch with his GP practice. Strange thing is that John received a letter from the council saying that he should have got a letter saying he was on the list, and his workplace contacted him at the beginning of this lockdown saying he was on the list so should stay at home. It all seems like a huge mess. John has emailed our GP surgery but hasn’t heard anything back yet. I know the lockdown is over now, but it is worrying that some people might not be on the NHS list and may need to be when the vaccines roll out.

Hi @Mandypandy, you show the confusion so well. We await hearing what your GP says ?
Is anyone else having the same problems?

@Erica @Mandypandy @Alice_BloodCancerUK
Used the link, received automated reply.
This stated all the reasons why a letter would have been sent. These were as first lockdown.
More or less inferred that if I’d not received letter then it didn’t apply to me.
What a mess!
I’d like to know that I was on the list for the first vaccines if they were not live.

Hi @Corfu80, have you heard from your GP yet?
Has anyone else had similar experiences?

@Erica
When I spoke to my GP during LD1, she didn’t even know I was on the ‘extremely vulnerable’ list. She said they’d not been informed & had no input into either!
It was the same comment from my SCT consultant.
Haven’t got a clue where they were accessing their database from, but they’d obviously not got my email or mobile contact details.
All a great mystery.

This does all seem such a huge mess. In the first lockdown, John got a text first saying he should shield, but then there were so many reports of people getting scam texts and emails that we didn’t believe it. But Johns employer, Tesco, then told him they’d been given a list of all their employees who were on the list and should be shielding. Then a week or so later John got the letter and then a month after that he got one from his consultant saying he should shield. This time - nothing except Tesco telling him they’d got a list again and he shouldn’t be working. If he worked anywhere else, he’d probably just be assuming he didn’t have to stay home this time. Its very bad really. I know there’s a lot going on for the government but through the whole of this crisis, its as if the vulnerable people have not been given any priority, but its the vulnerable who are going to be so badly affected by this virus if they catch it. I feel we’ve all been very badly let down.

Oops, never mind @Corfu80, I expect you have other things on you mind, please keep us posted.

Oh my gosh - did anyone else feel that the response that Boris made to the first question asked on the briefing last night, was just ridiculous. A poor woman, who had already lost 2 loved ones to Covid, asked why she was being asked to work rather than shield in Tier 3. Boris floundered for a bit then replied that she shouldn’t be asked to work if she is shielding!!! I know he has a lot on his plate with trying to keep on top of this virus and sort Brexit, but this is peoples lives they are dealing with. It is so upsetting that even people living in Tier 4 are still expected to go to work as usual if they can’t work from home even if they are in the extremely vulnerable group. Or have I got this wrong? We live in a tier 2 area but I am still so nervous about my husband going to work every day in a busy supermarket especially now there is an even more contagious virus. Do your best to stay safe everyone xxxxx
