Worried son has cancer

My son is 12 and has a swollen lymph node just below his tonsil. He had a ultrasound whoch showed no abnormal pathology and full blood work whoch was normal about 2 months ago.
This pst week he thinks the bode has got harder and sore to touch and must be since of a 1p. I contacted the gp but he dismissed it and said he will not see him again as its a reactive lymph node.

Im i being over reactive or do i need to pish for him to be seen again? Thank you

Hi @Sammy114

Welcome to our forum. I can imagine you’re feeling concerned about your son’s health. I’m not a medical professional so hopefully one of the nurses will be along soon to give you some advice.

Swollen lymph nodes can occur for lots of reasons, but if you’re concerned, a second opinion or visit to the nurse or GP will allow you to double check the situation and hopefully put your mind at peace.

In the meantime, take solice from the positive scan and the clear blood work.

Hi @Sammy114 and welcome to the forum.
I can tell how worried you are from reading your post: I’m the same when it comes to my children.
I’m glad the tests that were completed came back as normal, that’s a good start. However, if you are still worried - as @Toadmum said - you do have the right to request a second opinion.
Whilst you are waiting for this I would suggest you write down all of your questions and concerns ready for the next appointment. It really helps to go in prepared so you don’t forget to ask anything.
I’m not a medical person so cannot comment on the lump as often it could be a number of things.
I have copied in the @BloodCancerUK_Nurses as they can add more and have also shared the support line number as it may help to talk things through and think about next steps.

Please keep us updated on how you get on.

Hi @Sammy114,

Welcome to our forum. I am sorry to hear that you have concerns about your son. It is understandable that you are worried. Like @Toadmum has rightly said, swollen lymph nodes can occur for many reasons and it is reassuring that the ultra sound was normal. Reactive lymph glands are normally a result of an infection. Has your son been unwell recently?

As you are still worried and the lymph node is still there, like @Nichola75 said, you can request a second opinion. If you would like to discuss this in more detail, we would be very happy to talk to you on our free nursing support line 0808 2080 888

Kind regards
Fiona (support services nurse)

Thank youthank you for your reply.
He has not been unwell or anything.
Gp dismissed me and said its a rective lymph node.
He is the head gp in the practice so all goes theough him. They wont let me get a second opinion in that practice.
Im not sure what to do now thank you

Hi @Sammy114,

It is good to hear your son has not been feeling unwell. It is very likely that it is a reactive node but you can however, go back to the GP and inform them that his node has changed and you are concerned. You can also get in touch with the practice manager within your GP practice and raise your concerns with them about a second opinion.

Kind regards
Fiona (support services nurse)
