I had a pulmonary Embolism back in 2021 which was unprovoked. I am now on life long Apixaban. However since 2019 (maybe even longer) my Platelet counts have ranged from 423 to 491. I have had another blood test today so will see if they have improved. I saw my GP in May when it was 491 and suggested I had another test in 6 months. If it was still over the 450 range then she would speak to Haematology. Other blood results tend to be in range or borderline. I am also Type 1 Diabetic. Is the high Platelets count something I should be worried about following an unprovoked PE? I just wanted to get as much info as I could prior to seeing results and GP.
Hello @KarenA
Welcome to our forum and thank you for your post.
We are so sorry to hear that you had a PE in 2021 and that your platelets have been raised.
It sounds reassuring that your GP is continuing to check your bloods.
There are many different reasons for platelets to be raised, including autoimmune conditions and inflammation. Could we ask if your GP has suggested a reason as to why your platelets may have been raised?
Our page Blood cancer tests | Blood Cancer UK may be helpful to read over and has a link to Blood cells | Blood Cancer UK which states normal platelet count is between 150-400 x 10⁹/l, certain healthcare trusts have this range as 150 - 450 so it may be useful to check in with your GP as to which ranges they are using.
Platelets do help your blood clot so we understand why this may be concerning for you. Has your GP also checked tests such as clotting factors/ coagulation screen etc?
It would not be unreasonable to ask your GP to refer your to haematology or to see if they can speak to haematology about your bloods to see what they recommend as sometimes they can advise the GP of the next steps to take.
It may be useful to write down a few questions/concerns for your GP such as:
- why is my platelet count raised (if they haven’t gave an explanation to this)
- do I need a referral to haematology?
- are there any other tests that should be taken?
- could my increased platelet count of caused a PE?
- should I be worried about another PE?
If blood cancer is something that is on your mind, we would advise stating this to your GP too as signs and symptoms of blood cancer share a lot of similarities with other conditions and therefore may not be at the forefront of their mind.
More information on signs and symptoms can be found via Blood cancer symptoms and signs | Blood Cancer UK
