Hi my husband has Monoclonal gammopathy of unknown significance (MGUS) and we have noticed that he seems to be having issues whrn butten by insects. Usually he has been fine but the last 3 insect bites has swollen become sore and got infected. Am i overthinking this and is it coincidental. Both my mum and my stepmum died of multiple myeloma so I am a little panicked by any changes I see.
Hi @nellyw Welcome, I am glad that you have found us.
I always think it is best to get anything that gets infected checked out by my GP and it is also a good question for his medical team.
I will also copy your question to the Blood Cancer UK nurses @BloodCancerUK_Nurses for you.
I wonder if there are different strains of insect about as I am also noticing the changes with the increased areas of ‘wilding’ in this area.
I make sure that I am well covered up outside so the insects cannot get near me and because of my increased susceptibility to sun and skin issues
Of course the high factor sunscreen is everywhere, I also have a variety of hats.
Let us know what your husband’s team say.
Look after yourselves and please do keep posting as I look forward to hearing more about you both
Dear @nellyw,
Welcome to the forum, so lovely to have you here.
I am not sure if there are any direct links with insect bites and Monoclonal gammopathy of unknown significance (MGUS), but what Monoclonal gammopathy of unknown significance (MGUS) will do is make your husband more susceptible to infection which could explain the recent problems with the bites. I have linked in our information about Monoclonal gammopathy of unknown significance (MGUS) here which mentions the risk of infection. MGUS diagnosis and monitoring | Blood Cancer UK
As Erica mentioned it is really important that your husband visits the GP with any signs of infection so he can start the appropriate treatment. His immune system may not be quite as strong as before.
Best Wishes,
Heidi J (Support Services Nurse)

Helen
