Masks, Social Distancing etc - How are we all feeling about total lifting of restictions?

Watched GMTV today Dr Hilary is my new hero. He mentioned immuno supressed people/ cancer patients on more than one occasion not having the same Covid vaccination protection and for people to be respectful of others.

General feeling of the programme was very much that the current Government decisions will allow Covid to run riot and possibly mutate putting all at risk, vaccinated or not. They showed one of the 1200 scientists that petitioned the Government through the Lancet saying that the UK Government were running a ‘murderous experiment’. Let’s hope that all this pressure may force a u turn in the current madness.

Hi @Ismo I know what you mean. I don’t think it’s safe to stop shielding for any of us personally but of course it’s up to the individual and their own circumstances, employment etc. The ‘non sensible’ won’t comply and some people will just want to be ‘normal’. I hope that the pressure the Government is under from scientists in other countries and it’s own ‘sensible’ people will promote some legislation on mask wearing to be returned.

I’m due a stem cell transplant in two weeks time so my anxiety at being exposed to Covid is sky high so anyone who continues to wear a mask in the current climate is brilliant. Funnily just seen on TV that California have returned the mask wearing legislation due to 70% increase in Covid. Boris can’t stick his head in the sand forever can he?

Very best of Luck Lyn99 I hope all goes well for you. With Boris I imagine it is what he thinks will be popular with his back benchers and core voters which will influence him. In Europe this total reopening when cases are rising is being referred to as UK’s great gamble which is a little unfair to the Scots and Welsh who are being more cautious. Personally I think it is an experiment and we are the guinea pigs, obviously the research ethics which require the experimenter to have the participants informed consent do not apply to us!

We have been home from our holiday in Jersey a few weeks now and have come to no harm. We did a covid test a week after our return. Not a legal requirement just for our own peace of mind. It was negative. We were generally careful whilst we were away bur did travel on local buses a fair bit. We had some lovely walks along the coast and visited the Gerald Durell zoo. On our last evening we went on an organised trip to the races. A private coach picked us up from St Helier for the drive to the race course. Masks not required on private transport and a lot of young people on the coach were not wearing them. I did feel rather uneasy but were were sat at the front near the driver who was wearing g one and had the window open. We wore ours. We had a fabulous evening. A great end to a great evening.
I still don’t know if I have antibodies. I haven’t had another test after the first one came back showing I had none. I have had a second jab since then and am hoping t cells will protect me.
Tomorrow we are going to the North York Moors for a short break and next month a raise on Virgin Scarlet lady. All passengers are requires to be double jabbed and all will have a covid test before boarding.
I took my two young grandchildren out to an art exhibition last weekend. The first time in 16 months. I wore a mask in the cat and had the windows open as well as a squirt of first defense up my nose.
I have no idea if the precautions I am taking are adequate but it feels good to be getting my life back.
Sorry for the long post.

It’s sounds as though you are taking good precautions whilst still managing to do the things you enjoy. It’s good to strike a balance x

Oh @ilivesunshine it’s good to have you back, albeit briefly.
I have to say that Jersey sounds idyllic.
It sounds as if you are taking sensible precautions and also spending lovely time with grandchildren.
It is always great to have future trips to look forward to.
As for the antibodies I do not think enough research has been done yet into the blood cancer community, although initial findings are starting to come out.
Perhaps just keep doing what you are doing as safely as you can, and enjoy, oh, and keep posting as I am living my holidays vicariously through you !!

Hi @Lyn99 I agree with what you say, this isn’t going away anytime soon and can’t believe the recent decisions made by Gov. People are arriving in the country by any means and who knows what they’re carrying, the ability for the virus to change is really worrying.
I’ve had an email from Tesco saying they’re keeping all screens, anti-bac, masks and also priority delivery slots. If people refuse to wear masks they can’t make them but friends have told me there’s a lot of people keeping to the mask & distancing rules. I have my shopping delivered and was very relieved they were still doing the priority slots. I still only go out when really necessary, blood tests and Dr’s appointments, although most appointments are done over the phone. Do what makes you feel safe. Take care

Hi @Karenb56 I believe Sainsburys are keeping their priority slots still. I always weekly shop on line too.
Yes, the high spot of my life is also a medical appointment and I am always masked up and I try to walk as opposed to taking public transport. I am an expert in routes avoiding as many people as possible.
The Covid numbers are really rising at the moment so stay safe.
What are other’s thoughts?

I think you said it all with that last sentence - do what makes you feel safe X

Absolutely keep safe! alas I have to go out for work sometimes and have been occasionally shopping in person at quieter times. We did notice as you say Tesco are living up to their promise and I saw a couple of customers being asked politely if they would like to wear a mask which they did from the free masks on near the sanitisers. Sadly in our local M & S not so good, youngish staff many not wearing masks customers c60 /40 in favour of masks. I asked staff member to wear mask to serve me and he complied but took mask off again as I left. So will give them a miss in future. Thank goodness I don’t have to use public transport where I understand it is patchy during busy times.

Thanks for your experiences @Ismo.
Has anyone else got any experiences of the big world world out there, how does it feel to you?

I’ve just popped to a few different places and was surprised on the amount of people still wearing masks. Let’s hope it continues. However, the supermarket was the busiest I’ve seen it in a long time - queues down the aisles! Have we started bulk buying again - a little ridiculous :woman_facepalming:

Hi @Erica , @Karenb56 , my husband does click and collect for our supermarket shop and that works quite well. Otherwise it’s at our local small coop, screens still up and about 99% of people wearing masks. :grinning:

I still won’t go to shops but I really hope that people will gravitate to where they feel safest shopping. This might hit the finances and the availability of staff in M&S etc. and maybe they’ll rethink their policies?

Ultimately this virus is a danger to everyone if it mutates, not just us so it really is in everyone’s best interest to reduce infection any way possible. Although the vaccination programme is a wonderful thing (not so good for us personally I know) it reduces your symptoms but it doesn’t stop you getting and spreading the virus. It looks as though the wall of defence that the vaccination programme was expected to give isn’t quite as effective as they thought.
We are creating a perfect soup in the UK for the virus to mutate. Eminent virologists are warning of vaccination resistant covid but it seems to fall on deaf Government ears.

The New Zealand and Australian cricketers cancelled their visit here yet we have to live in this Russian roulette situation every day. I like to think that anyone who is aware of the risk we are in will reject the Government’s shambolic handling of the pandemic and would wear a mask and carry on with social distancing as much as possible. I don’t think it’s possible to persuade the freedom day advocates to do the same until it starts to affect them but I’m still hoping that the informed will make the right choices.

I am not currently able to work but I really feel for everyone in employment, putting themselves at risk through no choice of their own. My workplace wasn’t covid safe and there was very little I could do about it without losing my job at the time.

Of to hospital appointment today so that’s my outing sorted. At least everyone wears masks there!
Stay safe everyone.

Hi @Nichola75 thanks for asking, cardiac test today so hope all is ok. Just worried about those lovely people in the hospital being under such pressure again, so unfair.
On a lighter note, kettle arrived today so that’s the start of the special hospital room tea making facilities as per your lovely photograph xx
