Spring Booster Programme 2023

What a shock! I actually received a message on my NHS app to book my vaccine as I have a relevant condition which makes me eligible. Needless to say I tried before the text and since to book a vaccine and there are no sites currently under 13 miles away. I shall continue to check daily and hope the situation improves. I’m in North Yorkshire.
I should add that I’m in a town which previously had a vaccination centre. I have checked again and if I’m willing to travel to York, Bradford or Dewsbury I could get my vaccine. I’m hoping this part of North Yorkshire wakes up soon and delivers a service.

Hi Belinda, yes, mine is booked for the 19th April.

Hi Grandma Jo, yes the same here (in a city!!!). No centres available and I was first offered one 13 miles away. Eventually found one 8 miles away - as you say, vulnerable people who might not have cars will find this extremely difficult. I just don’t understand the rationale behind this at all. Got mine next Wednesday.

I have WM and have had problems getting the last 2 boosters so hoping this time it all goes smoothly.
I’m not over 75 so when asked just said yes to the questions regarding if I was immunosuppressed. I’ll take my clinic letters with me and the information on here, as well as extract from the green book. Fingers crossed.

Hi, I didn’t wait for my Dr to get in touch with me as I’d still be waiting this time next year . I did it online and am having mine on Monday. I would advise everyone to do the same as it seems the government are not sending letters out anymore.
Good luck to everyone xx

Hi Guys,
I had my Med Centre note that I was off vaccines, as advised by Haemo whilst on a trial with Rituximab/ Ibrutinib.
I’m now on daily Ibrutinib and I was given the OK by Haemo/Oncology to get the Covid booster.:mask:

I contacted the Centre to retract my previous note. Dealt with understandingly and quickly (in 24 hrs) by GP and admin. I’m confident I will receive an invite to the Centre. :health_worker:

No lengthy cross- country trips to some converted dance hall for me.:man_with_probing_cane:

With WM (a B cell/plasma condition) the chances of antibodies is low but I take it as a shot to nothing with extremely low risk from taking a a ‘Dead Vaccine’. Mine I’m told will be Sonofi.

With the Governments apparent ignorance on Blood Cancers, their national cut back on personal communications and the apparent lack of my Med Centre/Haemo/ SCN’s confidence in the NHS apps I’m happy to keep my treatment local.

Hope you guys have a smooth process getting your Jabs :relieved:

Further to my post above I booked my vaccine in a pharmacy which will take nearly an hour to get to and another up to an hour to return from, depending on the traffic, and add in the vaccination time……well you get the picture. My husband found out that our GP surgery is running vaccination clinics so he popped in to find out when this would happen so I could change the date etc. He was informed that they are only giving them to the over 75 immunosuppressed after doing the elderly in care homes and the housebound!!! Where on earth does that leave people like me? Talk about the #Forgotten 500k.
The delight in actually being told I could have a vaccine for only the second time is still resulting in the stress in trying to acquire one. I saw my consultant on Monday who told me not to delay getting the vaccine as there is a lot of infection around!
All of this does not result in me having any confidence that I will ever receive these vaccines easily until I fall into the correct age bracket! How can I feel confident that the roll out of the antivirals to GP practices will work for me receiving those antivirals in a timely manner? I am delighted that some people are getting their vaccines without a hitch but please spare a thought for those of us who continue to be invisible.

I too have received NHS text. This I will ignore as I’ve laid the path to my own local Med Centre.(see above).

The text indicated to the effect that if under 75 but on the vulnerable list bring evidence of your condition or even bring that NHS text notification.

Are you saying these NHS appointed vaccine points are working outside of the GOV.UK rules/criteria nationaly declared regarding the immunosuppressant and the Spring Booster?

I have WM too, in the waiting room for my booster now, hope you get yours OK.

I have all my information to access the vaccine and have tried to manage it locally with my GP who have declared that they are not vaccinating the under 75 age group who are immunocompromised at all. So I have to go through the National booking service who are not, so far, offering a local service. Those I can have are a considerable distance away and inaccessible if you do not have your own transport. That would require public transport with changes!

So sorry to hear this! Seems it’s all still a postcode lottery. I’m in rural Derbyshire but we have good coverage and an excellent GP practice - just had my booster (aged 69 but with WM).

Lababe,
What a pain in the Gluteus Maximus and I’d quiz your GP on their Hipocratic Oath. The official advice to the public applying for a booster is if not using the Internet you will be contacted by your GP.

Is it a “not at the moment” type no and they’re just going layer by layer e.g.
Old in care
75+
We"ve not invited the Immunodepresent inc.children (>5yr to 75yr) yet!?

Something for the learned in the BCUK nursing team to advise? Hope you get sorted without any more stress.

I just got my booster jab today (booked through the National Service not GP). I had taken copy of my consultant’s latest letter which had my diagnosis etc on it in case they needed it but the vaccinator just asked “are you immunosuppressed?” to which I said yes (he was just following a checklist in his computer system before giving the jab). He didn’t ask for any additional proof/paperwork. Good luck with your jab.

Beverleyannie,
Thanks and like you I’m not yet 75 and I’m living in rural Southeast Leicestershire. 5 miles from my Med Centre/Vaccine point. It’s not been a walk-in or make a booking from out of health practice point in all the previous sessions. It is a large practice.

My only delay is my GP/Haemo Oncologist wanting confirmation that there is not a contraindication between Sonofi protein based vaccine and my daily meds which includes Ibrutinib (BTK Inhibitor).

I’m on the Rainbow Trial (randomised Rituximab Ibrutinib Bio targetted combo against DRC chemo). I’m on the RI arm not funded by the NICE.

Expecting a reply back from SCN by tomorrow.

For a rare LGNHL Waldenstroms what is they say 3 in a million, it’s a small world. Keep taking the tablets

Thank you. I have been in contact with the practice manager who has stated that they will be inviting all eligible people as soon as they have the vaccine but do not know when that will be. They’re in the hand of the suppliers. The front of house staff did not say that!!
“You can book online if you wish” which is when all this started!!! Talk about revolving doors. I wouldn’t be bothering if this hadn’t been a recurring theme since the start of the vaccination programme. Just one of my vaccines has been delivered without a fight. The GPs have not delivered the service before, this is the first time, so would like to have them recognise that I am immunosuppressed for whatever is round the corner.

Hi @Iain I think you are right and it is a roll out programme and I got my invite today, I am lucky living in a town and there is a local pharmacy.
I will copy your post to the Blood Cancer UK nurse advisors for you @BloodCancerUK_Nurses just in case they can add anything.

Lababe,
Good! Got there, well almost. As I thought not an out and out NO but poor communications. When I enquired a month ago at my Med Centre the Receptionist wasn’t sure but got up and found out it’ll be an invite and the vaccine will be Sanofi. That’s given time for my Haemo team to confirm no clash with my broken immune system and protein targeted therapy.

Are you raiding the cooking sherry to celebrate?

Now there’s a plan! :joy:
Good luck with yours.

Which vaccine did you get?
Just got back from my husband having his booster he got the Sanofi one. But on the information leaflet it says talk to doctor etc. if you’re immunocompromised!
I have WM.
So not sure if it’s ok for us to get this one?
I’m 70 so not sure if I come under the elderly group😂 that is likely to get it.
I have emailed the support line for clarification.
Having mine done next Friday.
