The Monthly Monday Movie Forum Chat

We are trying something new- welcome to the Monthly Monday Movie Forum Chat, a little corner of the community where we put talk of blood cancer aside for a moment and focus on films.

Once a month on a Monday (usually the first Monday of the month), pop in and tell us what you’ve been watching. It doesn’t matter if it’s a brand new release, an old favourite you’ve revisited, or something you stumbled across at 11pm and couldn’t turn off. All films welcome, and no taste-shaming here!

Here’s how it works:

Reply to this thread using the template below. That’s it. No essays required (though we won’t stop you), and you can discuss to your heart’s content!

Film title:

Rating: /10

One or two sentences on it:

Trailer: (paste a YouTube link if you can find one!)

A couple of guidelines (we promise, just two):

  1. Watch out for spoilers - if your post gives away a big plot twist, you might want to add a spoiler warning. To do this:

    • Type[spoiler] at the beginning of the text you want to hide, and Discourse will do the rest automatically

    • Or highlight the text you want to hide, then choose Blur Spoiler from the formatting menu above the reply box:

      Screenshot 2026-05-21 172004

  2. Flag heavy content if it comes up - our community carries a lot, so if you’re recommending something with themes around illness, death, or grief, just give it a quick mention so people can choose whether to dive in. Not off-limits, just a heads up.

    • Did you know you can use the website ‘Does the Dog Die’ to search crowdsourced trigger warnings for movies, TV and more? Handy!

Other than that: all genres, all eras, all languages. Your comfort rewatch is just as valid as the arthouse pick :film_projector:

I’ll get the ball rolling, as it was myself, @GenesisDevice, @Rammie18 and @Duncan who wanted to set this thread up :slightly_smiling_face:

Film title: Rental Family (2025)

Rating: 9/10 (easily one of my faves so far this year)

Flags: Death and grief. But in my opinion in a poigniant and meaningful way.

One or two sentences on it: Brendan Fraser already ranks as one of my favourite actors, but I think this film gives him the opportunity to properly display his emotional range (and in a way that isn’t quite as gruelling as in ‘The Whale’. He plays a down-on-his-luck actor who lives in Japan, and is hired to play the ‘token American’ roles. But a new contract sends him down a few unexpected (and poigniant) paths that had me sobbing by the end of the film.

Oh what a great idea @Ceri_BloodCancerUK @GenesisDevice @Rammie18 and @Duncan

A film I just fell about laughing to, although as the title says there is a theme of death.
2 absolutely brilliant actors supported by a great cast, director, production and special effects team.

9/10

Ooh great recommendations already!!!

Thank you for starting us off @Ceri_BloodCancerUK, I’ve yet to see Rental Family but I note it’s on Hulu over here so I have no excuse not to see it now! It looks right up my alley, including the grief aspects. It’ll be interesting to see how Japan and its people and culture is portrayed—remember Lost In Translation and its various problematic stereotypes?! I love that Fraser is having such a great career comeback, and I believe his Mummy franchise is returning?!

As you know Mike @GenesisDevice, Star Trek II is probably my favourite too. The less said about its sort-of remake Into Darkness, the better perhaps

I agree @Erica, Death Becomes Her is so funny and as we know laughter can be its own form of medicine! Can Meryl Streep do no wrong?! She’s in The Devil Wears Prada 2 at the flicks currently, should you fancy seeing that.

So for my own first Monday Movie Forum choice, what’s something new I’ve watched…

Film title: God’s Own Country (2017)

Rating: 9/10

Flags: Outdoors nookie, dysfunctional coping mechanisms, and animal pain is portrayed :face_with_open_eyes_and_hand_over_mouth:

One or two sentences on it: Finally saw this recently which seems so apt for Pride month, and also an early incredible role from Josh O’Connor, now headlining a Spielberg sci-fi epic this summer. Totally engrossing acting from all, and who knew cattle markets could be so kinky?!

In a nutshell, God’s Own Country is like Brokeback Mountain (2005) in Yorkshire, or Weekend (2011) with farmers, or indeed Moonlight (2016) but British. A beautiful, raw queer study in finding oneself in the wildest of places.

Oh it’s nice and long @GenesisDevice! Sometimes the studio trailers can be so rubbish, or reveal too much, or miss the mood of the film altogether don’t you find. Will we ever see a good Trek film again :sob::vulcan_salute:
