So sorry @Jonpd I will copy this to Blood Cancer UK @BloodCancerUK-SupportTeam for you.
Let us know how you get on with other companies please
I did get an annual policy with Staysure which covers my trip next week to Cyprus and to Portugal later in the summer. They said they would give me the discount anyway.
I did look at Insurewith but their website didnāt recognise the medication I am taking which seems to be the starting point in declaring a pre existing condition.
The insurance with my Nationwide flex plus account couldnāt be extended to cover my pre existing conditions.
Unfortunately, it was Staysure who said they could not insure me as i take Hydroxicarbamide. They said, they couldnāt support anyone on any form of chemotherapy. They were the first of many to say no.
Can anyone recommend a travel insurance company that accepts someone with Polycythaemia vera (PV). I was asked by Staysure if I was on chemotherapy. I replied not on a monthly or weekly treatment, but yes a tablet (Hydroxicarbomide) each day for the rest of my life. The person then replied "Well, I@m sorry then, we cannot insure you if you are on chemotherapy. Does anyone know a travel insurance company that understands the difference between a tablet a day and full-blown chemotherapy.
Hi @berylsmart A familiar question but I cannot see one with Polycythaemia vera (PV).
However there is a lot of information here Travel Insurance and Blood Cancer - Living with and after blood cancer - Blood Cancer UK Online Community Forum
I think the best way for up to date information is if you give the Blood Cancer UK support line on 0808 2080 888 unless someone can share their ideas on here.
I look forward to hearing how you get on.
I have already phoned their helpline. They were horrified that Staysure had turned me down.
Might be worth trying Insurance With https://www.insurancewith.com/
Hi @berylsmart
I have Essential thrombocythemia (ET) and take Hydroxy, I got insurance through āPaying to Much.comā with no problems.
Good luck
So may 25 here. staysure wont cover me because Iām in maintenance and apparently becuase Iām still having some form of chemotherapy (quarterly and tablets) Iām too high risk. So seems like Iāll never get any travel insurance lol any ideas?
I will copy your post to Blood Cancer UK @BloodCancerUK_Nurses and I hope others on this site might be able to help with their experiences @Tara
Dear @Tara,
I am sorry to read you are having difficulty accessing travel insurance. There are some great hints and tips on this thread already.
Unfortunately we wouldnāt be able to recommend a particular provider but would suggest calling round some of the suggested providers in this thread and discussing your options.
We would be very happy to talk things through with you, you can reach us on 0808 2080 888.
Best Wishes,
Heidi J (Support Services Nurse)
Very hard to get travel insurance with blood cancer but with solid tumour Carcinoma cancer itās not as long as the cancer has been gone around 5 years, not sure about Sarcoma as itās much rarer and you donāt encounter many people with it and their stories.I think that the problem the insurance companies have with blood cancer is it has a high incident of coming back and as itās blood based itās not something you can just cut out of a person. You can get policies which exclude the cancer and in theory say you broke your arm youād be covered but I can see they might argue that the blood cancer either somehow caused you to slip and break your arm or made your bones weaker so I myself wouldnāt touch that .
Hi @tara I used the staysure website to get travel insurance. I answered all the questions that came up and was given a full cover policy. I donāt remember a question about chemo as i take chemo tablets for Chronic myeloid leukaemia and would have said yes if it was asked. I also have Essential thrombocythemia (ET) and both conditions were covered. It might be worth a look just to see if you get a better answer. Fingers crossed.
Hi @Tara - I have Chronic myeloid leukaemia and was able to get cover with World First Travel.
Dear Tara, l tried dozens of providers but unsuccessfully. Staysure were very unpleasant and wouldnāt insure anyone on a chemotherapy tablet. In the end i insured happily and easily with Travel Insurance 4 Medical. (TI4M). Very easy. Very helpful.
My experience trying to arrange travel insurance for a recent trip for one week to France. StaySure declined straightaway because Iām taking hydroxycarbamide. Next on my list was All Clear who provided cover for around Ā£60. Quite an extensive and fairly intrusive interview with their customer service rep - but it was worth it just to get the coverā¦
Thanks @Aidan for your travel insurance experiences, I hope you enjoyed your week in Paris.
Take lots of care
Iāve posted about this before but for complete piece of mind I always use InsuranceWith.
The main reason I use them is they ask comprehensive questions regarding your medical history.
I recently traveled to Mallorca for the annual holiday, compared prices with a few others including Staysure. However at the end of the process with Staysure Iām never convinced that they will provide the medical cover if required as they donāt ask the same questions as InsuranceWith.
I work in financial services, as part of my job I sell all life insurance and personal protection products, therefore totally understand the risk of non disclosure. Insurance companies want to pay out on claims but if they get a sniff of any non disclosed information at the point of application they will refuse the claim.
Thereās no point paying a premium if you canāt get the claim paid due to not disclosing the correct information.
Hi @Muzza I agree with complete peace of mind too.
Look after yourself
