Travel Insurance and Blood Cancer

Hi Karen, thanks for getting in touch. Itā€™s a pity that Nationwide wonā€™t cover you because itā€™s a great deal.

My situation is that Iā€™m 57 and was treated with R-CVP up to Dec 2016 and then had 2 years of Rituximab. I also had a small stroke in Oct 2016.

Now on 6 monthly consultations (W+W) with bloĆ²d tests. I ticked Yes to currently having treatment for F-NHL. I was screened on the phone last year and previous years, but just did it over the internet this year. Nothing has changed and they have always logged both conditions as exclusions but offered to cover me if I want it, every year.
I have chosen not to ask for specific cover relating FNHL and the stroke. This is because Iā€™m on clopidogrel to prevent future strokes and the FNHL is indolent and my bloods are excellent (i.e. no longer immunocompromised). They have offered me extra cover for both conditions this year too, should I wish to take it up. I think itā€™s an extra Ā£158 but donā€™t quote me on this.
Maybe the difference is that I was treated and am now in remission. But who knows?!
Glad you got sorted out with another insurer.
Take care of yourself and enjoy your next trip. Iā€™m just off for 3 months inter-railing around Europe tomorrow! Cross fingers that the trains behave themselves.

Hi Purdy, many thanks for your info, iā€™m so glad you are able to take advantage of the Nationwide FlexPlus Insurance, as you say itā€™s a great deal, I have also used their breakdown cover several times, and it has been excellent.

I am also older than you, 70 this year! I had not even thought about additional travel insurance, until Covid came along, I was diagnosed in 2019.

Your trip sounds fabulous, have a wonderful time, thank you for taking the time to reply. :crossed_fingers: your trains will run smoothly, sure they will. Bon Voyage

I have travel insurance through my bank account but Iā€™m not sure it covers blood cancer. i tend to err on the side of that itā€™s not really worth me taking out additional insurance as if anything were to happen to me while I was travelling they probably wouldnā€™t pay out anyway. Most of my trips are of short duration anyway and very low risk.

That sounds a brilliant deal. Thankyou for posting to the forum Alice.

Hi
I havenā€™t posted for a while, there isnā€™t much to say except I continue on ā€˜Watch & Waitā€™.

My daughter is getting married this year, in South Africa, now have questions about insurance.

What do I need to do about travel insurance?
Should I declare my Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) and will they understand that I am not in need of any treatment?
Is there a company I should use?

Any advice is gratefully received.

Thank you

Johanna

Hi @Johanna1 good to hear from you again.
A question often asked I attach a link to the last thread
Travel Insurance MGUS - General chat - Blood Cancer UK Online Community Forum
It gives details of Staysure ( other companies are available) but this company has or had a discount opportunity for Blood Cancer UK patients.
Do do your own research too.
I would suggest that you need to be honest about pre-existing conditions to be covered by the policy. Even though you are not currently on treatment often we have weakened immune systems.
Often patients find travel insurance policies are very expensive.
Let us know how you get on and I look forward to hearing about your daughters wedding in South Africa. Look after yourself

I have used Insurancewith for the past couple of years as found them cheaper for short trips. No difference between staysure and insurance with if I was going to do a yearly policy but it works out cheaper as only go abroad a couple of times a year.

Compare both for price and also the cover as this can be vastly different

Hi Johanna I have used insurance with previously; you must state you have Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) and are on W&W. We had to claim for a USA trip cancelled when the pandemic came and they were very efficient and paid out in full very quickly. Also they were much cheaper than nationally known insurers. have great trip.

You must declare condition, otherwise it could invalidate the entire insurance. After much hunting around, Iā€™ve stayed with Nationwide FlexPlus (bank account with Travel and other insurances bundle). We need an age and individual trip length extension (going away for 60 days - InsureWith limit is 45) . . . the compromise is that my non-Hodgkin Lymphoma isnā€™t covered but anything else is. Iā€™m taking the risk nothing that may happen can be attributed directly to my blood cancer eg if I break a leg, get Covid etc., these are all covered. Seems that the insurance industry hasnā€™t caught up with what ā€˜Watch and waitā€™ actually means . . . but Nationwide had a very helpful call centre advisor, itā€™s very reasonably priced and weā€™re covered for a longer trip. Hope this helps, although I guess not everyone can risk not covering their declared condition. Beverley

Hi @Johanna1 - in addition to everything already shared, World First might also be worth exploring. Iā€™ve been living with Chronic myeloid leukaemia for almost 12 years and have used them for most of my travel insurance. They have been reasonably priced, taking into account my condition.

Travelinsurance4medical.co.uk have been very good for me I have declared all my conditions including lymphoma osteoporosis and the fact I am currently awaiting a biopsy following a positive pet to my tonsils. One trip full insurance just over Ā£100 for Europe .

If you donā€™t declare a medical condition on the insurance and they find out itā€™ll invalidate the whole policy. This will be the case even if you had an accident, say broke your arm, which had nothing to do with the Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL).

Hi @Johanna1 As an update to my earlier post ref. Nationwide Flex Plus Travel Insurance (you have to bank with Nationwide to get the insurance). During our recent extended trip to Spain/Portugal I had to make a claim on our insurance for my husband (heā€™s fine now, all sorted and covered by the policy). This involved several phone conversations with various ā€˜advisorsā€™ including an extension to our trip length. One of the advisors told me that I was wrongly ā€˜medically screenedā€™ when first setting up the policy. She said that because Iā€™m on ā€˜active monitoringā€™ ie Watch & Wait my non-Hodgkin lymphoma does not need to be screened, since Iā€™m not having treatment . . . Sheā€™s now removed it as ā€˜not coveredā€™ on our policy. Like with many of these things, it depends how good the person you talk to is and how well theyā€™re trained. Hope this helps as a possible insurance option for your daughterā€™s wedding in S Africa. Look after yourself, Beverley
