Hi Kevan7, I only needed uk travel insurance because the hotel I had booked had to be paid in full 8 weeks in advance!! Its not really for medical treatment but insurance against cancellation for any reason plus covid cover.
Hi Muzza and Cid…thank you for the recommendation of Insurance with…I managed to get the uk single trip policy with them. They were really helpful and I will certainly go back to them if we are in a position to go abroad later in the year. Thanks again to both of you for the advice xx
Difficulty in getting travel insurance. Quotes are very high Any advice
Hi @Colin I am useless with linking things I will ask @Alice_BloodCancerUK to assist as this question has been asked before
Good luck
Hi @Colin how are you doing?
I’ve just merged all of our general travel insurance threads together so it’s easier for people to read all the tips and info shared above.
No answers to my question
Hi Colin, we aren’t able to recommend specific travel insurance companies. However, there’s quite a few tips and suggestions from people above in this thread.
Some other places to look for information might be
- Buying insurance if you’re ill or disabled | MoneyHelper
- Lymphoma Action | Travel insurance (lymphoma-action.org.uk)
- Getting travel insurance | Cancer information | Cancer Research UK
I wonder if anyone else has used a travel insurance company they would recommend?
All Clear or Stay Sure are pretty good. Also often they will only quote for a single trip not annual insurance.
Have tried them both and the estimation was enormous
Sorry Colin. Unfortunately I think companies often think we are risk for cancellations/making claims so quotes tend to be high. You could ask for a lower quote excluding cover for blood cancer but that’s a bit risky as insurance companies would try and link any claim to blood cancer and not pay out potentially.
Oh @Colin sorry the estimates were enormous, yes, unfortunately we are classed as high risk especially after being classed as Clinically Extremely Vulnerable during Covid.
Look after yourself
Try insurance with. I have a family annual policy it cost £350 which I thought was good considering I was only about 5 months post stem cell transplant when I took it out and.
On @Muzza’s excellent recommendation, I have just got insurance for a 3 week holiday for a family of three - with extra departure/flight disruption insurance, because of the airport chaos predicted to run into the summer - for just £188! I used Insurance With’s website, which asked me comprehensive questions about my past Acute Myeloid Leukaemia, stem cell transplant and chemotherpay-induced cardiomyopathy, so I am confident they have a thorough grasp of my medical history - and the website is slightly cheaper than buying it over the phone. I think £188 is very reasonable to cover someone with a medical situation like mine, and my family and the possible disruption over the summer. Thanks, @Muzza.
Excellent news @Fullofbeans thank you for sharing this!!
Hi @Alice_BloodCancerUK
Do you still need blog pieces for how people are coping with getting on with living, at this stage of the pandemic? I meant to help, but had a busy week - and now can’t find the details.
All the best.
Hi @Fullofbeans, I do think @Alice_BloodCancerUK is still keen to hear from you. She is training today but we will get back to you if that is ok?
Take care
Gemma
Yes that’s fine. Thanks, @GemmaBloodCancerUK.
Hi Colin, did you try Insure with…quite a few people have used them and I recently got uk travel insurance with them. They were really helpful
A friend of mine with MGUS is trying to take out holiday insurance with Staysure a recommend.
She rang them and was asked the question if she was pending any tests or investigations. She said she was waiting for a routine blood tests which was for her 6 monthly monitoring. They are asking her to ask the hospital to define if it’s routine or an investigation.
I would have thought that that a company who are dealing with blood cancer patients would know about Watch and Wait or active monitoring. It’s taking the shine off her holiday plans.
Anyone else had a similar experience
I havent travelled since my MGUS diagnosis so cant help with my experience ,sounds like its got a bit complicated but if your friend’s blood tests are 6 monthly sounds like her results are pretty stable ?MGUS is a new word to most people and I find that I am getting really good at describing it .It is a plasma cell dyscrasia and a precurser to multiple myeloma ,so with watch and wait its not likely to suddenly be a big thing and need treatment overseas .I hope that your friend can get the shine back on her plans. Are you keeping well yourself?
