Update - Time to Retire

Hi there, a while ago, I posted about my workplace difficulties. It was taking so long to sort things out that I decided to resign. I finish at the Prison on the 28th. I was then thinking, Im almost 50 now so perhaps I should just look for part time work and basically retire. So, I have bought a lot more gadgets for my camera and so will as mentioned before, do some photography now. My wife’s mobility has also decreased so I need to be there for her as well. Hope everyone has a great christmas and new year. Ill be volunteering at the NYE fireworks in London.

Happy Christmas to you both.
I hope you are feeling happier now that the uncertainty is over.
I joined a local social media photography group and it is a complete joy. I am more of a complimenter than a contributor but did discover perfect snowflakes falling the other day and took shots of them looking like snow flowers on grasses and clothing. I Joe you can do the same and find a group.

Oh I am so happy for you and your wife @Jbeaver12 that retirement is so close, you have made my day. I realise you have not had an easy time this year.
I am sorry to hear that your wife’s mobility has decreased.
You and @GrandmaJo photography seems a complete joy to your both
Volunteering at the NYE fireworks in London is a brilliant, fun thing to you.
I can tell you get up to all sorts in retirement.
Yes, a very Happy Christmas and new year to you both and please do keep posting.

Oh @GrandmaJo your local social media photography group certainly does seem a complete joy to you and much fun. Enjoy it in 2024.
Be kind to yourself and please do keep posting

@Jbeaver12 remember the old adage about getting your kids into photography, They will never have the money for sex, drugs and rock and roll! The same applies to older adults expect we er only buy “when it is on sale or a good deal second hand” Good luck with finding your eye and style

Hi there, I like taking photos of old buildings. Its just really a hobby for me although I do my best. Ill just take a group of photos of a particular subject and out of that group, there will be that one really good image. Good luck with the photography

Thanks Erica, been thinking about doing a full time job again and just thought about enjoying myself more. Part time is better for me. Maybe in a couple of years, I could consider doing a full time job again depending on how I am but I am going to enjoy my time away from full time work, do more volunteering, help people more , look after my wee family. If only i thought about this before, I might have been able to medically retire and then access my pensions etc. Maybe I should look into this via the doctors etc.

Oh @Jbeaver12 perhaps medically retiring is definitely worth a try, perhaps if you don’t try you will always be wondering.
Personally from experience just take your time before making any big decisions work/commitment wise, just enjoy

Hi Erica, Im currently in my notice period and finish a week on Thursday. I may go to the GP and discuss whether I am fit for work atm after everything that has happened. Despite my illness , I always need to be busy (like others no doubt).

Hi @Jbeaver12 perhaps just give yourself time, I certainly had a ‘To Do’ list of of jobs that I had been avoiding.
I would say that you have retired at a time of year when the weather is not appealing to ‘get up and go and do’.
Although it is definitely a good time for very black/white photography opportunities.
Are you looking for paid or voluntary work?
Perhaps not so many paid staff are taken on at this time of year.
You have done some incredible voluntary work in the past.
I am sure you will find all sorts when the time is right, unless you are snapped up before!!!

Thanks Erica, I will be returning to Tesco soon once we move back to Scotland .

Hi @Jbeaver12 sorry I had forgotten about your impending move to Scotland, please do keep us posted how it goes, I hate the whole process of moving home!!
Take it steady

Enjoy your retirement @Jbeaver12 I know too well what you must be experiencing. I have been in and around prisons for 33 years ! I joined in 1991 but took early retirement a few years ago , so glad I did as it was soon after that I got my lymphoma diagnosis. I have been very lucky to be very well supported by my new employer as I do still work in and around prisons just in a different capacity. I’m not sure how it might have panned out if I had been in my old career!
Life is good on the other side there is a whole other world and your health is way more important. Good luck look forward to seeing some pictures.

Photography? That’s a dream come true! I was actually into photography, but difficulties appeared, so I was unable to develop my hobby. I hope you’re doing well!

Hi, thanks for your comment. I have been interested in photography for years. My dad used to take photos and develop them himself. It is just a hobby but I do try other avenues of photography at times ie. events etc. I started with a small compact camera 38 years ago now I have a Canon D700 with enough kit that I could convert it into a full video camera system, Hope ur doing well.
