5th covid booster

There just seems to be so many inconsistencies, I’d waited the recommended amount of time between jabs. I’m booked at another centre tomorrow morning so hoping to get it done and dusted then!

Thank you and thank you everyone for your comments and support.

I was in and out in minutes, got my fifth jab and wasn’t asked to produce anything. Strange how it varies.

Hi Vicki hope you got your jab ok.

I did thank you. Your husbands situation sounds similar to mine. I just don’t understand the inconsistencies in approach :woman_shrugging:t2: Glad he got his booster too.

Sorry if my vaccine query has been answered elsewhere and I just haven’t spotted it. As 119 had been brilliant sorting out my 3rd and 4th jab I went back to them to sort out my 5th jab. Unfortunately the guy I spoke to didn’t sound like he wanted to put in much effort but when I said I want to go somewhere that guarantees Pfizer he said most centres didn’t list what’s available but the Walk In Centre at Rotherham United Football Club did show Pfizer available. So a friend took me there - no NHS signs on the building entrance so took ages to find correct entrance and then was told I couldn’t have Pfizer as they keep that for under-18s!! So I had to have Moderna BUT I thought there was a time when Blood Cancer UK said NOT to have Moderna as only given in HALF a dose? Please advise and loads of love & God’s blessing on everyone who reads this. xxx

Hi @GillB I cannot answer your question but I will copy this to the Blood Cancer UK nurse advisors @BloodCancerUK_Nurses for you.
When I had my 5th vaccine the nurse said that they did not know what vaccine they would be giving until the batches arrived.
How are you getting on?
Look after yourself.

Hi @GillB I received my fifth jab recently and was given Moderna after receiving Pfizers previously. They didn’t mention anything about this and it wasn’t something I was aware of. But just wanted to let you know it’s been fine other than a bit of an achy arm.
Hope you’re ok x

I found that all centres near me were only giving Moderna so I had that following all
Previous Pfizer vaccines.

Hi @GillB,
Thank you for your comment and i hope you are keeping okay in this current heat we are having?
Your question is certainly one that has been queried before & as you have highlighted, we too have also heard that pfizer supply in some areas will be held for under 18 yr old cohort.

You are correct in your thinking that Moderna dosage was important. However this was predominantly for the purpose of a 3rd primary dose vaccine, as at this time it was important to ensure all blood cancer patients were given a full dose ( primary) , rather than a half.

However for the roll out of a booster dose, such as your 5th vaccine, it is perfectly safe to accept either moderna or Pfizer in the dose it is provided.

I hope this offers some reassurance for you Gill & do know should you wish to talk this through any further please do know that our support line can be contacted 7 days- 0808 2080 888.

Hi Gill

I had my 5th booster dose which was Moderna yesterday. Don’t feel brilliant, rather achy all over with a very painful arm. I don’t remember having such discomfort with the other jabs but have not enjoyed the best of health lately. I really don’t want to put any more alien substances in my poor old body but the consultant advised me to have it. I have to trust that they know best as I am in no position to make that judgement. Lately I seem to be less trusting than I used to be. I am off to bed hoping all the aches will have improved in the morning. I have Adult Social Care coming to assess my needs with a view to providing more care, I didn’t ask for the assessment it was decided when I attended when they were assessing my husband. It will be interesting to hear the outcome. Maybe it would be useful if the aches stayed for an extra day. Marylin

Hi @Marylin,
I am sorry to hear that your are experiencing some side effects from your recent vaccine. I hope they are somewhat settling now?
Your feelings of not wanting to take onboard more vaccines is understandable as they can make you feel a little off for a few days.
It is hoped that they more vaccines our blood cancer community do have the better fight you will have against covid. However i do appreciate this can lead to many questions about what feels best. So do know that if you ever wish to talk anything through- our support team are always on hand- 0808 2080 888.

Hope your managing some rest, Lauran

Hi Lauren
I am sorry if I gave the impression that I am against covid vaccines, I am not, i do think they are necessary for our protection and for the protection of others. However I breakfast with 9 pills and another 5 at supper and 2 more at bedtime, I know they keep me alive but I feel I have enough foreign substances in me without adding more plus I hate having needles inserted, I find them quite painful. I seem to feel pain more and more.

My social care assessment resulted in them providing 2 hours a day for 5 days a week for which I am most grateful. I did manage not to point out that my disabilities don’t miraculously vanish at weekends, thought it might be rude of me to do so but hopefully one day health care providers will start to think 24/7. Hi @Marylin,
Absolutely no need to apologise, we completely understand that vaccines on top of every other medication. therapy, investigation and everyday side effect or symptoms can be at times just too much.
It is indeed such a strange world we live in with all things covid and this is always a safe place to share how you truly are feeling.
I am pleased that your assessment went well and i hope you do feel a benefit from the 2 hours provided. Do let us know how you get on.
I do know that your level of care should be fairly regularly reviewed so don’t be frightened to let them know should you feel more is needed at any stage.

Take Care, Lauran

Hi Marylin - i too have had ET for 8yrs and apart from one hiccup when i changed to Interferon i have been well (im back on chemo now) - i had my 5th injection 1 month ago and it was Moderna - i was apprehensive as previously only had Pfizer- however i had no reaction at all- i did however get Covid in April but i coped ok - it was a cross between a bad cold and the flu - it didn’t keep me in bed but i had a few days where i just laid on sofa and watched tv ( I’m normally quite active so very unusual for me ) - I do however suffer badly with mouth ulcers and my oncologist has now prescribed me a cortisone mouth wash which will be delivered in a few days time - i do hope your reaction to the jab is short lived and you feel better soon x

Hi
Mouth ulcers sound horribly painful I do hope they are getting better and the mouth wash is effective. I suffer mostly with fatigue, I have to really push myself to do things. A day out yesterday means all I want to do today is sleep. I have been put on Warfarin as other blood thinners have not prevented clots, the INR results are yo-yoing up and down and have yet to reach my target. Apart from occasional dizzy spells which could be due to advancing years and or the Hydroxycarbamide I seem to have dealt with the booster after effects.keep well Marylin

Hello @nelletap (Tricia),
I hope it is okay to get in touch with you via the private messaging.
I wanted to let you know, as that your last message to Gemma was an open message for all to see, so our moderators hid it as it contained your personal details (name and NHS number).
Most of the people using this forum are genuine and very helpful, but we thought it best to hide your comment and ask what you would like to do?

Would you prefer to keep it hidden and I can ask Gemma to reply directly to you, or would you like to take out the parts with your personal details and re-post it on the forum? We are happy for either of these to happen.

I have read your message to Gemma, and if you don’t mind me suggesting on her behalf, that I would encourage you to report your reactions to your vaccines more formally.
I am not sure if you have ever heard of the YellowCard reporting site? This is the link: Yellow Card | Making medicines and medical devices safer (mhra.gov.uk) It is very easy to do and it does help the drug companies keep a better record and data of reactions to all medications if people have reported them.

Please do get back in touch with us and let us know if you want us to repost your messages, or if you have anymore questions at all.
Take care.
Best Wishes,
Heidi.

Hi All. I’ve only had the two part vaccine and 1 booster. Diagnosed with ET in Jan this year. Should I have had another booster?

Hi @Adw265, yes, if your booster was at least 3 months ago, you’d be entitled to another dose because you have ET. You might find it useful to read through this page about covid vaccines for people with blood cancer, but please do give us a call free on 0808 2080 888 or an email at support@bloodcancer.org.uk if you want to talk it through - How to book a covid vaccine if you have blood cancer | Blood Cancer UK.
